Great idea!
I vote for....drum roll: "I feel this is my moment."
An excellent candidate. It really triggered the old gag reflex. Attagirl Angie.
who wants to bet that her position at the foundation will fold back under her former position (I can't think of the name of it)? and magically disappear.

Hey! I didn't see anywhere in that article that she was stepping down from her position with the Research Foundation.
I'm still trying to figure out what so all-fired hot about that chick. Can anybody name a single "outstanding" thing she has ever done, except for using state money to buy laptops for business people?
My question is essentially the same as was posed earlier by Invictus. How does an individual who's academic field was English, supplemented by a law degree but lacking licensure or legal experience, parlay a community college administrator's position into a career as a nationally recognized economic development guru? Lacking any specific training or credentials in the field, what's her claim to fame? At the very least, she must be a might good talker.
I noticed in one post the York name came up. The York family has been the beneficiary of all Hattiesburg development in the last 20 years. The rich become super rich and people wonder why East Hattiesburg doesn't want to pay extra for a burger.

Yeah, that's what I was askin'. Of course, I asked it so much more clearly
This sort of thing seems to be more and more rampant--underqualified people are being given positions of greater responsibility (and pay). I'm getting cynical.
The key is in understanding the fascination with economic development as defined by the political machine in this state. Angie's move to Mississippi and rise to power is based on economic development rhetoric...the kind that has NOTHING to do with economics.
Trace it back to its very shallow but far-reaching roots.

Huzzah huzzah! Kudos to Truth! I hereby nominate her for best quote of the day, or whatever board awards are currently available for wit and perspicacity.
Today I accessed the ADP website in order to try to determine the relationship, if any, between ASP and USM. I read the University Relations section of the ADP website. It says "The objective of this committee is to promote community support for the University of Southern Mississippi's activities and events." The narrative continues:
"This committee develops and implements a program that encourages the community to support Southern Miss football, provide suggestions for Southern Miss promotional events and community involvement, and promote events through Area Development Partnership (ADP) pubications."
". . . sold spirit packs to area businesses . . . paint the "Golden Eagle" stencils in several large intersections around the city."
"Gold Southern Miss shirts available to wear on Friday's and game day."
"Each member of the committee will purchase a Southern Miss Spirit Pack, join the Eagle Club, and buy season tickets. Follow-up leads will be given to Southern Miss."
"ADP will promote home games by way of broadcast max, newsletter and the Hattiesburg American ADP spread."
". . . promote Southern Miss athletics and provide information for the 2004 football season, in an effort to increase business support for the university."
"Special promotions include spirit packs, ticket and corporate tent sales."
"Businesses are encouraged to display their Eagle Pride by purchasing "Go Gold" T-shirts to be worn at all games."
MY COMMENTS:
1. The University Relations section of the ADP website appears to me to be almost exclusively devoted to athletics (more specifically, football).
2. What about the other USM activities (e.g., academics, cultural)?
3. Hattiesburg is being touted as a retirement community. My guess is that those who select Hattiesburg as a retirement site are attracted more by USM's cultural (drama, music, etc.) and academic opportunities than by football.
4. What about William Carey? Is the ADP committed solely to USM? After all, William Carey is also located in the ADP area (Forest and Lamar counties).
The University Relations section of the ADP website ends by reproducing the 2004 USM Football Schedule.

I suppose this is just a nearsighted transcription error & not a cut'n'paste job from their site. In that case, Myopia, your Freudian slip is showing
OTOH, maybe I hope it is a cut'n'paste job. In that case, the ADP's Freudian slip is showing. "Economic development rhetoric" indeed!
Dang! This board is turning me into the resident pre-vert (which I happen to be on a bunch of other boards )

William Carey has neither a football team nor a wurl' class department of polymer science. Don't think they offer a mail-order Ph.D. in Economic Development either. I can't see any reason the ADP would be interested in collaborating with a small academically oriented liberal arts college. If they had luxury sky boxes, well, it might be a different story.

Invictus, you're running neck-and-neck with Emma for the non-existant weekly humor award.
Well I think it's perfectly great that Angie got the ADP job and all you idots don't know what you're talking about. Outa my way, Kentucky Girl. It's my show now.
Someone needs to write a letter to the paper and clarify what the faculty senate really said. This story makes it look like Angie's resume was clean as a whistle.
