"University of Southern Mississippi President Martha Saunders already has experience moving a universitys art program into a struggling downtown, members of the Historic Hattiesburg Downtown Association learned today. ... We have big dreams, but weve got to roll up our sleeves and work through the practical issues, and money is a big one, she said after speaking at the groups monthly meeting. "
"But just looking at other examples you can see what happens when you take a building here and there and put in an art program."
The university is currently involved in the Southern Mississippi Arts and Restoration Team that is restoring the historic Hattiesburg High School, pushing improvements to east-west transportation corridors between Southern Miss and downtown and ultimately hoping to increase the number of university students living downtown.
Saunders said she would like to take an entourage from Hattiesburg to visit Columbus to weigh the successes of that program."
