There's a lovely moment in C. S. Lewis's The Voyage of the Dawntreader when the protagonist Lucy, having learned from a magic book that one of her friends has betrayed her, then turns to a page marked "for the refreshment of the spirit" and reads a wonderful story that makes her happy again.
This list has been troubled of late and I suggest it's time to list a few refreshments of our own, perhaps links to great webpages or perhaps recountings of the best moment of our summer. I'll start. For webpages, try the blog of a fellow children's literature enthusiast from her trip to Iceland, replete with pictures,
For the best moment, hmm. I had a very, very busy summer dashing from rare book library to rare book library, but the travel between libraries was wonderful. Last week I visited four different libraries (Boston Old Public, Harvard, Yale, and U of Vermont) and also attended a conference in New Hampshire. The many hours driving from place to place may have been the best part of the summer. The roads were good, fairly empty, and ran through cool, beautiful pine woods threading on and on through hills and mountains.
Thank you Ram and Jameela, those images were a wonderful, positive way to begin the day. Many on campus feel the invigorating effects of the new mood on campus coming forth from the dome. Let's all contribute to that new environment as best we can.
