Univ. of Houston-Victoria Report

In the base gossip category, I offer the following early assessment from my acquaintance who sits on the UH-V Board of Regents.  While the honeymoon is far from over, early reports from faculty members and the UH Chancellor give the new UH-V prez rave reviews.  He's said to be well liked by faculty members, with whom he's been quick to bond, and his faculty open-door policy is said to be a big hit. He's receiving extremely high marks from superiors for his forward thinking, and his innovative ideas as to attracting new students and building a quality institution (I don't have examples--just this general comment).  So, has a change of scenery caused  the leopard to change his spots?

Also of interest, I discovered a substantial advertisement in the business section of this morning's Austin American Statesman, promoting the new U of H-Victoria Executive MBA program (offered, in part, on-line). I find this remarkably gutsy, that the U of H is willing to go toe-to-toe with UT-Austin on their home turf.  It's a bold and shrewd move in my opinion.  UT has constantly increased the "price" of their executive MBA to it's current level of $90K, causing many prospective students to complain that they've priced themselves out of the market.  Seemingly, it's the perfect time for UH-V to enter the marketplace with a similar degree at 1/3 the price. I also note that the ad touts the UH-V program as being rated as a "Best Buy MBA" by GetEducated.com, whoever they are.

Interesting point.  Did TH perfect and employ the ethically challenged, behind-the-scenes wheeler dealer approach to adminstration as an adaptive  behavior, essential to survival in the USM/IHL  good ole boy milieu.  And if so, has he now cast it aside as unnecessary, given his fresh start in a professionally run university system under the watchful eye of a competent chancellor and independent board of regents?

TH is adaptive as a coyote. At USM, he played by the rules (or lack thereof) that governed the game there. And at UH-V, he's playing by a more generally accepted set of rules. And he adapts.

Now, whether he's cast aside the wheeler-dealer approach as unnecessary or has cast it aside because casting it aside was necessary, would be a more interesting question. And I don't know TH well enough to answer it ... I kinda lean toward the latter.

Give him time. Every new president (well, almost every new president) gets a "honeymoon."

I do know Wile E. Coyote and I believe he'll ride this new horse as far as it'll take him. He's nothing if not clever and adaptable.  Beginning at UH with a tabula rasa, it'll quickly become evident that the new managerial paradigm will prove  more fruitful (and less stressful) than was negotiating the dark back alleys of the IHL.  He'll still wheel and deal if and as necessary. It just may not become necessary in the new environs.

In other words, don't misunderestimate Uncle Tim.  :
