President Plans Addition to Southern Miss Leadership Team

Hattiesburg University of Southern Mississippi President Martha Saunders plans to restore a cabinet-level position to her leadership team pending approval from the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning in September.  A vice president for university advancement will be appointed to oversee foundation activities, fund development and alumni relations.

This individual will have a critical role at the university and deserves executive status, Dr. Saunders said.  He or she will develop fundraising initiatives, ensure good stewardship of our current gifts, and plan strategies for friend development.

The position is the final piece of Saunders streamlined leadership team.  Since her arrival, she has trimmed the size of her executive cabinet from nine members to five and has expanded representation on her extended cabinet.

The Executive Cabinet will include the university president, university provost, vice president for research and economic development, vice president for student affairs and the chief financial officer.

A national search for the new position will be launched upon IHL approval.

Wasn't Curt Redden the VP of Advancement during the Fleming years? And why was that position eliminated or never hired for during the Thames years?

Perhaps because Shelboo wasn't trying to advance USM...only his own interests and his daughter's career.

That would be a reasonable assumption.

It may be just a coincidence, but it appears that the people moving on were among those who received obscene, undeserved raises in recent years from Thames.

USM Foundation boss quits

http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070805/NEWS01/708050312/1002

...Changes in leadership at the University of Southern Mississippi continued Saturday with the resignation of Tim Ryan as executive director of the Southern Miss Foundation....

...USM changes...

...July 11: Dana Thames, who chaired University of Southern Mississippi's Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education for the past seven years, is forced from her post and returns to a faculty position. Thames is the daughter of former President Shelby Thames....

[reader comments]

...All these reductions in the cabinet should change the budget of the university that the former president expanded. I'll bet Dana is enjoying that last huge pay raise thanks to pop. I would like to see a few more deans changed too. Maybe they will resign before getting axed....By the way Dr. Saunders, take a look at the salaries of female professors and compare them to the male professors doing the same job, and most of the time a better job, and you will find that inequality (discrimination) still exist on campus. Come on and give the ladies a pay raise sufficient to match the male's. If you look closely, you will probably find that the female professor have gotten the least percentage in the last couple of rounds....

...Dr Saunders has already stated her intent to raise administrator salaries. Dr Dana Thames was given a merit raise well deserved for leading her dept to be considered one of the top 10 in the nation. This was one of the gems of the university serving many people of the state before an interim dean decided to play politics hurting many people in need ....

...As a further f/u , the faculty recieved a 21% pay increase during the Thames admin according to college board statistics as mentioned in a speech by Robin Robinson. The avg state employee recieved less than 5% during the same time 5 yrs.
Also , Dr Saunders is not reducing the # of administrators , only the people meeting directly with her ....

Good ole "powereagle" -- we can always depend on him to jump in and give the Thamesian version of events.

Saunders puts stamp on USM's leadership

Martha Saunders, the new president of the University of Mississippi, is wasting no time in making over her top leadership. The last weeks have seen several resignations and new appointments, some of them interim.

Any new executive must have the ability to assemble a team that shares the executive's vision and can carry it out. So it is with Saunders....
