Has President Saunders given any indication of her position on area accreditation? I am not referring to SACS, but to many accrediting bodies that accredit specific disciplines. There are pros and cons for having discipline specific accreditation of areas. Often it puts pressure on the administration to funnel money to specific areas in order to meet the standards. This is particularly true if the standards include research output (or its equivalent) in addition to curriculum demands. Moreover, accreditation standards sometimes conflict with the goals and objectives of the University. Ex-President Lucas was very supportive of achieving accreditation in areas as a way of increasing the exposure and reputation of USM. I would put Fleming in that camp also. The Thymes administration exhibited much less interest in external accreditation including SACS. It will be interesting to see where President Saunders comes down on this issue. My guess is that she will be more like Lucas.
I think you are correct, Cossack. It seems she is being hit with many facts, issues, and ideas all at once, and is trying to digest them. It should be difficult for a president to be against accreditation; whether or not the president is willing to put scarce resources behind that support is the critical question, isn't it?
