What? Not only is Southern Miss absent but I can't find Texas A&M....or even the University of Houston at Victoria. The polling methodology must be flawed.
How about an explanation from Ms. Mader and the friendly folks at the USM Ministry of Truth?
I looked at the abstract, but not the paper (sorry . . .busy grading). It did occur to me that it would be interesting to see what the relationship was between geographical location of the students in the sample and what schools they picked. I wonder if the students could have even recognized some of the schools that were not in their general geographical area, particularly some of the small liberal arts colleges. So . . .perhaps you social science wizards out there can take this one.
While perusing the AAUP message board during my lunch hour, I noticed the list of "105 Top Universities" along with your comment concerning the obviously flawed polling methodology. I concur with your assessment. That neither Ashland Community and Technical College nor the Thomas Cooley School of Law are among the most favored institutions is prima facie evidence that the results are incorrect. I shall have my Risk Manager contact the purveyors of this pap and demand an immediate retraction.
Dr. Goebbels has asked that I address your concerns related to the conspicuous absence of USM from the recently published list of "105 Top Universities," as selected by student polling.
There is a very simple explanation. We have determined that the student questionaires which formed the basis of this poll were mailed to the Office of the University Provost, Tim Hudson, some weeks ago. Rather than effecting distribution, Dr. Hudson ordered their immediate destruction. We believe this was a willfully malicious act, in the same vein as his failure to complete the USNWR ranking forms, his submission of negative faculty evaluations to the IHL, and his provision, last Saturday, of the USM football playbook to the University of Alabama.
We are taking steps to remedy the polling oversight, and will make every effort to insure USM's inclusion in future college rankings. Thank you for your unflagging support and understanding.
Quality is indeed up, but I've already logged 21 decent noms this week & that's working from the computers in the lobbies of the seedy hotels where the Zimmer Man is making us stay.

Invictus,
Seedy hotels indeed, but what character they do have. At least you're benefiting from that Zimmy-approved organic macro-biotic diet, far superior to the typical greasy road fare. We eagerly await your safe return to Faulkner country. Don't suppose you could talk the great one into coming back with you and reprising his legendary Reed Green concert. Offer a Golden Revelry t-shirt and a couple of Aramark polymeric hot dogs, maybe an honorary doctorate in economic development. You might just convince him.
The big problem is that Zimmy likes to stop at those seedy hotels that have hourly rates & then everybody in the band starts getting calls from their wives. The other bad thing is that he hates air conditioning. Which might be why he's avoiding Mississippi lately...
