I will not respond to the President's letter . . . I will not respond to the President's letter . . .

BUT I will say that the current administration including Herr Pood would not recognize "ethical behavior" if it bit them on their passive agrassives.

Thank you, AAUP fan. Were Dr. Stevenson's comments persistent? I doubt that one or two comments in class justifies that kind of behavior on the part of the administration.

Frankly, I think keeping the students informed of what is going on with their University is a moral responsibility of all faculty members. Ultimately the Thames fiasco has hurt and will continue to hurt the students, as faculty leave and no one will come to USM to replace them, library resources decline, and Shelby emphasizes grant-getting over teaching. Perhaps the administration is afraid of another student demonstration like the one last March. You know, I really wish the photos of that demonstration that were on the Fire Shelby site were still available. It was quite amazing.

From page 226 of the AAUP red book:

"The academic freedom of faculty members includes the freedom to express their views (1) on academic matters in the classroom and in the conduct of research, (2) on matters having to do with their institution and its policies, and (3) on issues of public interest generally, and to do so even if their views are in conflict with one or another received wisdom."

So, why did Pood say that Dr. Stevenson was in violation of AAUP policy? Seems to me she has every right to make comments.

Thanks for the photos! For those of you who haven't seen them, they cover not only the big demonstration at the dome in March, but the demonstration at which the president of the ACLU spoke, D.C. Berry's award smashing in front of Liberal Arts, as well as sidewalk chalking.
