And I'd like to pick out my favorite quotes from the speech:
I do not believe in the existence of one single, perfect college able to fulfill the dreams of university-life for every student. Rather, I am convinced of a perfect university for each student, a university at which he or she is best suited in order to thrive and learn and grow.
And this one:
Regardless of the major a student ultimately declares -- a decision perhaps reached after consulting with parents, though often times not -- she will be just fine. For that is the beauty of a liberal arts education. And yet concerned parents constantly ask, "What does one do with a geology major? A political science major? A performance major in oboe? A biomedical engineering degree?"
"Whatever he wants," I gleefully respond. "Attend graduate school, teach small children, write the great American novel, invent a medical device the likes of which cannot yet be imagined, manage a soup kitchen or a billion dollar company. The possibilities are truly without limit."
A student educated at Vanderbilt can do all of these things and more because here they learn to think, to examine, to act.
Thanks for your wise words, Chancellor Gee. ---

I think a few people need noted here:
1) THe staff who love their jobs, love their students, and spend genuine time with each student requiring self respect from the student and self respect for the student The ones that say, dang, he helped me. I went to 4 offices but he helped me in 1 stop.
2) The staff who do not love their jobs. The realize their positions of respect and adoration are gone forever, but stay because they love their real USM Family. It is your buddy you lunch with, shop with, drag a smoke with and spend incredibily joyous times together becase we meet and become friends with these quality people.
Accolades from these people, costadial staff, secretarial staff, chairs, directors, grad asst and other give you smiles and kind words remembering....

There was a history of USM published several years ago. I believe it was called "Dearly Bought, Deeply Treasured." The title has come to mind as I've pondered the IHL decision and the postings on the board over the last 24 hours.
Accolades to those who CLEARLY deeply treasure this university: Frank, Gary, Myron, Anne, Amy, Dave, Stephen, Jo, Andrea, Ray, Fire Shelby, and the many, many others whose names we do not yet know but hope to know soon.
Accolades to those to whom the term "dearly bought" applies: Frank and Eva and Gary and Mary Ann, who went through hell last year. Without them, we would not even be to thise point.
Heroes all.

I think the timer is off by a day. I read the IHL statement to say "until May 20th" not "through May 20." In that case, the end of Dr. Thames term would occur at midnight of the 19th. It seems like this came up once before but was never resolved.

I was just looking at this "first to flee" list. Though most of these folks would have left anyway, I see the names of several who left ONLY because of SFT. And in this group were some valuable and nationally respected people.
Griffin, Farrell, and Martray---all well-known and respected in their areas--all are players on the national scene
Cotten--the best VP for Research this university ever had
Santell--too ethical to carry out SFT's wishes
Kirkpatrick--essentially fired
Harris, Redden--Fleming appointees but were able to work with Lucas

RE: 2002-03 Departures
A search of the ERIC database reveals that Dr. D Thames has had six abstracted publications from 1994-2005 (averaging about one every two years). Dr. M Whiting has had twenty in the same time period (almost two per year). Thus, by this one index, Dr. Whiting's scholarly output by quantity is about four times that of Dr. D Thames. Relative quality is open for debate. But at USM, numbers, not quality, seem to take front row. Appropriate research output at various academic ranks in Education is left for brighter minds than mine to ponder.
Dr. D Thames is noted for her ability to bring money to her department. It is a good amount of money, in absolute terms. For those interested in funding sources (as well as funding to others at USM and to our sister institutions in the state), go to www.cagw.org. Happy surfing. ---

Then that would be a change b/c there are multiple staff persons listed on each of Babbs' lists including this one.

If the staff is not listed here, there should be a separate list. The loss of staff people like Dana Keith is a reall shame.
One more staffer for this year: Jan Roberts, budget officer, College of Arts and Letters. She was the administrative secretary in the COTA office for many years--Green, Luce, Alexander, interim dean Stringer--all depended on her. ---

The resignations of both Mark Danley and Ginamarie Pugliese had nothing to do with Thames. As much as I hate to admit it, I just wonder how many others "coincidently" retired or left because of other reasons. hmmm... ---

RE: 84 USM Departures, 2004-05
As you were told on another thread, there was never any attempt to sort people on this list as to the reason they left. Babbs simply records the departure and the destination if known. That was made clear from the get-go and has been explained several times since.

If you are going to speculate in a public forum on my reasons for leaving USM for another position, you should check with me first. While there were a number considerations behind my decision to leave, I want to make clear that I disapproved completely with the Shelby Thames' style of leadership and a great many of his decisions.

It is true that while I left for multiple reasons, I did not and do not approve of Shelby Thames' leadership. I am glad this board is open to people clarifying their own position when others refer to their motives.
I understand, nevertheless, why the original poster, "random thought" might have conjectured what he or she did. It's understandable that one might raise questions beyond the Dr. Thames situation when more than one faculty member in a single department leaves a tenure-track position within a year of taking it.
Sincerely,

I imagine that the Counseling Center has become a high stress environment with all the faculty, staff, and students who are trying to cope with post-Katrina issues. Also, with demand for counseling so great throughout the region right now, there are probably good opportunities for professionals to move. USM is a job, not a lifelong commitment.

Would anyone care to comment on the overall quality of the replacement faculty?...Looks like several hundred people have left in the past 4 years. How are the new faculty?. Are they young and untried, unproven? Or have they been replaced with seasoned faculty from other schools? I suspect a mixture of new and seasoned.

The new faculty may be very talented and have great prospects, but I'd be very surprised if they were experienced and with the kind of national/international reputation some of the departing folks had. It's just too expensive to hire that kind of person.

USM has had great difficulty in recruiting faculty in the last year few years. Applicant pools have been small and of a decidedly lower quality. I heard that a department in CoAL actually couldn't find a qualified candidate to fill a position this year, and liberal arts faculty are a dime a dozen.
Academic labor markets are the tightest they've been in years; USM salaries are very, very low; applicants are leery of living Mississippi; Katrina certainly hasn't helped, and the schools reputation is toast, thanks to SFT. I wouldn't get too excited about the schools new crop if hires.

In CoST salaries are higher. They are recruiting good candidates who can bring in research /contractual services grants, even though they have zero teaching experience. But wasn't that SFT's "game plan"? MIT (Mississippi Institute of Technology) of the South!

I'd love it if USM became the MIT of the South. MIT is much more than engineering: it has one of the strongest econ departments in the world; it has outstanding history, sociology, poli sci, anthropology Ph.D. programs, and the list goes on. Great Universities all have their special strengths, but they all share a commitment to knowledge and understanding in all its forms.
Out administration's vision for USM is something much smaller, meaner, pettier; its about using state resources for personal enrichment. Public service to the students and the state be damned.
By the way, there already is an MIT of the South; Its called Georgia Tech.

yeah--i heard powell went over to the dark side. (just kidding) part of the scuttlebutt is that the previous chair took a leave of absence from her previous job to take the job here, took graduate courses in like spanish (i think) so she would be able to teach that language at her previous employer, and then returned there. so much for a national search, i guess.

Hi Stephen--
I am "out there" and have had a challenging and rewarding academic year at the University of Arkansas in Fort Smith. I believe that these endeavors were described a bit more fully on another thread that has descended in the posting order since last August.
I am daily reminded of the many important things that I had a chance to be part of as a member of the Gulf Coast Division of Education and Psychology and as a university citizen. The best things that I remember are happening here in western Arkansas where I am now. I am planning to stick with it and am optimistic about the future.
Our home in Ocean Springs is coming along, but that is a stop and go thing as is so much that is part of the "new normal" on the Coast. About a month ago, I saw Shirley Bowles briefly at the airport in Gulfport as she was returning from a speaking engagement out of town and as I was returning to work following a short visit to tend to necessary details with the contractor, the city and such. Thanks very much to all of those faculty heroes who helped to save our home so that it could be rebuilt and not demolished. We hope to be able to host friends in the house sometime this summer to catch up and to give thanks.
Please share my best wishes and regards with my great friends and colleagues at the university. I am a proud alum!
Good to hear from you. However, would you mind editing this post and making a new thread? (Just cut and paste.) Then I'm going to close this thread, so it can be for reference only. Thanks, and good to hear that you're doing well.
