The le Citation de la Semaine selection committee noted that this week's message board postings, although relatively few and far between, were filled with many observations, information, opinions, and suggestions which, although very thoughtful, interesting and deserving of attention, fall a bit short of meeting the criteria for the weekly award. Nonetheless, the committee did discuss at length the comments made by a rare poster with the pseudonym Following the Situation from the East Coast who provided an assessment of one dimension of USM's economic development program: ". . .I remember that there's no economics in it. The mathematics requirement is non-existent. How can one understand ecomomic modeling withint a firm foundation incalculus." That same poster submitted this challenge to the other message board viewers: "Since we're talking real economics here, anyone willing to make a prediction on the economics Nobel next week? My money is on Jagdish Bhagwati. Any other predictions?" Yet another viewer, also on the East Coast, accepted the challenge by replying, "My prediction is that the next Nobel Laureate in Economics will be Dr. Ray Perryman." The selection committee liked that interchange, and believes that we may have two knowledgable east coasters monitoring the message board and providing inside tracks on the this week's Nobel Prize contenders. Therefore, the selection committee members placed their own individual wagers on the Economics Nobel Laureate contest, and they are looking forward to this week's official announcement from Sweeden. In another posting directly related to economic development, but at the other end of the spectrum, the committee (with one dissenting vote) agreed to distance itself from the tongue-in-cheek bordello-filled suggestion by Invictus: " . . . Mississippi should have followed the complete Nevada model. When it legalized gambling, it should have legalized prostitution," and with Austin Eagle's ( also tongue-in-cheek) "Chicken Ranch" comment of affirmation: "I agree. Had Mississippi adopted the complete Nevada model, think of the opportunities for USM for yet another cutting edge degree program . . .Brothel Management" Groupie #1 expressed concerned that Miss Information may be quite upset with Invictus' reference to the Broadway show "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas." The committee believes, however, that Invictus will be able to explain it away by calling Miss Information's attention to the fact that wholesome C&W singer Dolly Parton starred in the movie version. The selection committee noted the limited number, but more serious, comments made on an unusually large number of events which occurred this week (including but not limited to the triparting of the economic development program, the post- tenure review events, the reorganization status of the AA/EEOC office, the litagation outcome pertaining to a termination matter, and the one completed and one pending tax bond vote). Now for the final selections, all of which are meaningful, short, and snappy. The selection committee could not agree on a ranking, so we agreed to present them in alphabetical order:
foot solder: "More signs of amateurs in charge."
older, not sure about wiser: "Academia jest ain't what it used to be"
ram: "Seems to me shared governance should mean more than just passing the buck."
Contratulations to the three of you.

In the immor(t)al words of Richard Milhous Nixon, I just want to make two things "perfectly clear": (1) Miss Information has already scalded my eardrums over the legalized prostitution post & (2) it was AustinEagle & not me who brought up that Dolly Pontoon movie.
BTW, Miz Pontoon will be struttin' her stuff at the Grand Casino Biloxi this comin' weekend...

Having been somewhat distracted, I have not been posting much lately, and do not consider that quotation one of my best efforts (hardly in the category with a Stephen Juddism). But THANK YOU! I am honored and wish that my literary struggles here could count towards tenure.
I would like to add my personal favorite quote of the week, which was not on the board, but comes from the national president of the AAUP, Jane Buck:
"We're not always right when we speak out, but we're always wrong when we do not."

foot soldier, just last evening members of the selection committee were reflecting on the names of posters who have been with the message board in good times and bad times. Your name was among them. Your comments are always sensible.

Guilty as charged, and I apologize for my lapse in judgement. I'll do better at maintaining message board decorum with future posts. That old Dolly flick (which really wasn't very good) was filmed in and around Austin in the early 80's. During the filming Burt Reynolds leased a house from a friend of mine and was gracious enough to invite many of the locals to his regular social "gatherings" with the cast, including Miss Parton. It wasn't on the same level as hanging out with Sir Lawrence Olivier and Vivian Leigh but certainly made for some interesting evenings. Now that I think on it, Charles Durning's portrayal of the corrupt Texas governor may remind some of you of a certain unctuous university president.

That's the down side of being, well...polyonymous!
I agree about Foot Soldier, author of the most heart-wrenching post in the history of the board(s).

The identity implications of occasionally posting under more than one moniker was actually discussed by the committee, polyonymous. But if all posters were exclusively mononymous, Mal 'n Vict's Miss Information would be driven up the wall as she prepares the Nom d'Aplomb script each week!

And what was that? I can't remember! Geez, I'm blushing. You made my Monday. I betcha my former chair and former dean would not call me reasonable.
