Welcome Dr. Saunders!!!

I know that Dr. Saunders has a number of important meetings with key players during her first few days on board (yaay!!!).  Can anyone on the boards provide insight into details, as to when she is meeting with whom?

Best wishes, Dr. Saunders! We wish you great success !!!

I thought I saw a note in the HA (print, not online) that she was attending a COB fundraiser in New Orleans tomorrow night, and has a Cabinet meeting at 9 on Monday morning. I saw lights on over on Jamestown late this afternoon.

Oh, and BEST WISHES!!

Saunders era at USM begins Monday
May 18, 2007 05:16 PM

A new era begins Monday at Southern Miss when Martha Saunders takes over as the university's ninth president.
The Hattiesburg native and USM graduate will actually begin her official duties Sunday night in New Orleans where the College of Business is hosting a fund-raising benefit.

School officials say Saunders will be in the office Monday morning at 9:00 and plans to have lunch with student leaders later in the day.

Saunders, the former chancellor at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater, replaces Shelby Thames, who spent Friday saying his farewells to staff and administrators.

Thames plans to return to work at his internationally recognized polymer science research department in the building that bears his name.

How long will it be before she meets with "faculty Leaders" or with each college?
Students leaders will be gone in two years, faculty leaders will not.  If she is to be successful, more than any other group she needs to get faculty support.  I would be interested if anyone has heard about her plans to interact with faculty.

Fear not. Dr. Saunders will deliver on that score.

Tom, could we let her show up at the office tomorrow, find her desk, maybe get some coffee and meet her support staff, before we start with the gloom & doom? Let people have their season of hopefulness -- it's been a long time coming.

You know what people say: Wish in one hand and $#!t in the other and see which one fills up faster.

I agree that NOT meeting with a significant, non-administrative portion of the faculty is a blunder.  However, it's indicative of the same-old, same-old mentality.  We're still on the plantation, and the student is the customer.

Unfortunately, some folks will never learn that good leaders are born and not made, and these early signs of oblivion shouldn't be dismissed.

And you know who she's met with, how?

I'll say the same thing to you I said to Tom. She just walked in the door.

wow...my first day at work i couldn't find my arse from a hole in the ground.  i certainly didn't live up to your expectations.  from a practical perspective, she needs to learn where her office is, get a computer set up, get her voice mail taken care of, set up her e-mail account, etc.  but, i guess maybe we should expect her to fix all that has ailed this place in the last five years during her first day on the job.

Meeting with substantial numbers of faculty before the incumbent departed would have been in poor taste. We're just going to have to get used to a president with manners.

VN is probably hacked because MDS went to a COB function last night. Dollars to donuts VN wasn't there. That's probably where the venom is coming from. Besides, didn't Myron Henry attend the meeting this morning on behalf of the Faculty Senate?

Not only one with manners, but one who will not say she might have to "step on a few cheeks" to get things done.
