USM gets 7 percent tuition increase

http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070517/NEWS01/70517011/1002

"The state College Board today granted the University of Southern Mississippi a 7 percent hike in tuition for the coming academic year, Provost Jay Grimes said.

Southern Miss had requested a 12 percent increase for Mississippi residents and a 15 percent increase for out-of-state students."

"The board also voted to charge students a $45 one-time fuel fee . . . ."

A fuel fee? I woudn't touch that line with a ten-foot pole!

I'm not surprised at all by this. Here at the University of Texas at Austin, our "tuition rate" includes a $150 fee per semester to "provide funding for the  university's estimated energy consumption." It is prorated for part-timers with a minimum of -- wonder if there is any connection here -- $45.

Of course, since tuition deregulation in Texas, UT has seen amazing increases in tuition rates over the past few years. With gas prices heading upwards almost daily, we're going to see more of these "fuel fees" on everything you can imagine. Personally, I think it is a marketing gimmick, i.e. "It's not our fault. We can't control gas prices." And, in some way, maybe it is a smart gimmick. It's not like we weren't paying for the fuel before.

The Mississippi state legislature (and many other state legislatures, too) no longer see higher education as a public good, but instead see it as a private service provided by the state. As a consequence, they are shifting the cost to students, and making them bear the brunt of costs.

I've seen powereagle post a lot of virulent anti-faculty stuff on the HA site.  It's pretty much all offensive.  Hope somebody reminds him that his hero requested a 12%, not 7%, increase.
