Alas...I fear the movement is losing steam. In a google search, the USM AAUP message board now appears in 4th place...it used to be in first. Gurenburg (sp?) is gone...risk managers and their assistants are missing...the Night Chalker I fear was captured months ago by USM Night Stalkers and probably sits in a small damp room under Joseph Greene Hall which only a few know exists.
There have been intimations that the faculty is so busy right now that no one has time to actively question the administration. Whatever the reason, things sure are quiet.
In addition to Gurunuburg, Night Chalker, Thomas Cooley, and assorted risk managers, I worry about the "disappeared" Student Printz, the Faculty Senate and the PUC.

Does the PUC still exist? Is Thames behaving better? Being so far removed from the scene, I don't know what to make of the silence.
I agree...people are busy. Unfortunately, this is just what SFT wanted...for enough time to pass so that everyone would "forget" what he did to Frank and Gary, and "forget" the egregious email monitoring, and "forget" the overwhelming no-confidence vote, and "forget" the 499 other bad decisions that he has made. I, for one, will not forget, and I hope that none of you will either. But, as for what we can do as a movement, I suppose we will have to look to those "on the ground"....faculty and staff who are still working in the trenches at USM. I hope that we will hear from some of them soon as to what the climate is at USM right now.
Don't worry guys, I am almost positive that SFT will do something stupid fairly soon that will rally the troops. Have faith in his stupidity. I do. The Student Printz thing is bothering me too by the way.

It is going to be extremely difficult to get rid of Shelby Thames. He is protected by a political sponsor, Roy Klumb, who has a long term in a powerful office, and virtually no accountability.
But if the USM faculty say nothing, Thames wins in a walkover. He can stay in office as long as he likes.
Most disturbing to me is the apparent willingness of the current Faculty Senate leadership to cut deals behind the scenes while saying nothing against Thames and his accomplices in public. There is a long list of things the Senate could and should be raising a ruckus about (including the fact that the Student Printz is apparently being blocked from publishing an online edition)--yet we are hearing not a single peep.
Keep in mind that there is one thing Thames really can't do, and that is fire tenured faculty members for criticizing him or his henchpeople. His attempt to get rid of Frank Glamser and Gary Stringer, and the attendant publicity, really did cost him with the IHL Board. Hardly anything else has. He and his deans can make trouble for tenured professors who criticize his administration, but he can't fire any of them.
So Faculty Senators, if they are tenured, can be proactive without running much risk of getting fired. These are gut-check times for the USM Faculty Senate.

Robert,
I must point out that Roy Klumb will turn over the reins of the IHL leadership to Virginia this next year. Do you believe Klumb will retain his current political power after Virginia takes over?
Green Hornet, thank you for reminding me that Klumb's Reign is about to be reigned out. Meet Virginia (or Train's version of meeting her)
She doesn’t own a dress, her hair is always a mess If you catch her stealin, she won’t confess She’s beautiful She smokes a pack a day, oh wait, that’s me but anyway She doesn’t care a thing about that, hey, She thinks I’m beautiful Meet virginia She never compromises, loves babies and surprises Wears hi-heels when she exercises Ain’t that beautiful Meet virginia Well she wants to be the queen Then she thinks about her scene Pulls her hair back as she screams I don’t really wanna be the queen Her daddy wrestles alligators, mama works on carburetors Her brother is a fine mediator for the president Well here she is again on the phone Just like me hates to be alone We just like to sit at home, and rip on the president Meet virginia Well she wants to live her life Then she thinks about her life Pulls her hair back as she screams I don’t really wanna live this life She only drinks coffee at midnight, when the moment is not Right, her timing is quite-unusual You see her confidence is tragic, but her intuition magic And the shape of her body - unusual Meet virginia-i can’t wait to Meet virginia-yea Chorus I & 2

Ah, but wasn't Dobby freed with Harry Potter tricked Dobby's evil master into giving him a sock? A liberated house elf has to work, y'know?
Dobby wonders, though, if the dean of CBED argues with the Gnome bashes his head against lamps when he argues with the Gnome & shouts, "Bad Doty! Bad Doty!"
While anti-Thames forces have a chance with Virginia Newton chairing the IHL Board, it is a slim one. Will any of the Board members be replaced next year? Klumb has assembled a majority of 7 out of 12, maybe bigger than that now. What can Newton do to change that?
As for Thames not firing any more tenured faculty, I wrote that before the post-tenure review revelation came out. I may have to eat my words...
as far as i know, no new board members until the next governor. can newton make a difference? yes. but she was compromised by interacting too much with hudson. i hear she "blew the whistle" on him. it's a group. she's the chair but has to build a consensus. don't know if she can. but i know her better than most, and i think she'll do well.
