..."As a freshman here on campus I don't really know the full extent of the complaints against him, so I will not attempt to try and determine the validity of these grievances."
"It goes almost without saying Dr. Thames has contributed a lot to the Polymer Science program here, ..."
"After communicating with Paula Mathis, an employee in the Honor's College, I found out Dr. Thames has also made significant contributions to scholarship programs. According to Mathis, since Thames has been President, the number of presidential scholarships, , or full scholarships, has doubled. "
"On a somewhat more personal note, I am here on a scholarship Dr. Thames helped to make possible. "
..."Honestly, the contributions Dr. Thames has made to our university have earned him a level of respect he just isn't getting from many of the people here."
"As a freshman here on campus I don't really know the full extent of the complaints against him, so I will not attempt to try and determine the validity of these grievances."
The erasure of history was one of Thames' goals: get rid of anyone who knows how things have worked in the past, get rid of anyone who recognizes the truth about him and his past, etc. This freshman shows how easy that is. Is it time to look back at the "lest we forget" thread and tell others to do the same?
Give the kid a break. Does she appreciate the myriad ways in which SFT has damaged USM? No, of course not. Does she acknowledge her ignorance? Yes. All she is asking for is a modicum of respect for the guy, based on her own experience of getting a Presidential Scholarship (and she thinks SFT responsible for an increase in the numbers of those scholarships). I don't think that he deserves the respect, but I'm also not sure that this letter warranted any comment from anyone, much less hypercritical and disparaging comments about a young student. Our job is to educate, not to chastize. Move on.

I agree. It's difficult to explain to people who haven't been watching the whole story, just what the issues are. FWIW, I don't remember who the president of my university even was when I was a freshman. I do wonder what inspired her to write, but when I think of the truly silly things I believed at that age . . . oh, it's embarrassing even now.

Here is my problem. The headline said that Thames is worthy of much respect, and the ONE AND ONLY bit of evidence that the writer presented was some scholarships, of which she is a recipient.
This is a perfect example of a story that has no basis, that should not be written, at least under that leading headline. SHE benefitted from ONE thing that Thames MIGHT have helped occur. That pales in comparison to the VAST amount of problems Thames brought to USM.
This is a hideous, short-sighted opinion article and I hope the writer learns from the criticism. The criticism is genuine and honest and doesn't mean to belittle the writer. But, come on, the article has no evidence in it and no one can take it seriously as a result. I hope the next effort is a better one.
