March 29, 2007

Greetings to the Southern Miss Community:

March is an exciting time! Our students have returned from spring break, and we look forward to celebrating the university's founding on March 30. Our academic achievements continue and the sound of bats cracking around "The Pete" (Pete Taylor Park) can be heard from our nationally-ranked Southern Miss baseball team. I am proud to share the following University news with you....

Well, that was a nice little message.  It opened and closed with a discussion of athletics.  I hope that was the last message from SFT I will read.

Didn't Psychology also get a recent top ten national rating?

Thanks for that. Important lapse in the President's message, especially in light of the Provost's continued assertion that Psych is underperforming and "not sufficiently engaged."

Psychology has already booked over 1.2 million in external funding, doubling last year's efforts. And the year is not over yet. Psychology also has the largest SCH/faculty generation ratios in the college, generates about 40% of the college SCHs (about twice that of the next most productive department), had the most graduates in 2005-2006 in the college, and is consistently among the highest in classes taught/faculty ratio in the college (www.usm.edu/ir). Note that these grant apps were initiated when Dean Pierce was in office--you may recall that Dean Pierce was taken to task for Psychology's poor performance. I still can't figure out what data they were looking at to make this judgment... And I can't imagine why the new powers that be in the college would want Psychology to move elsewhere.

I hope Dr. S's first move after she walks into her new office and gets a cup of coffee is to reinstate Dr. Pierce.

To Lily's comment I would add that Dr. S. should also offer Professors Stringer & Glamser keys to their old offices and computers with hard drives intact.

Actually, either Dr. M or G Stringer would get my vote for Provost.

I could not agree with your statement more, however, there is no doubt in my mind that Dr S is a true lady with a lot of class and style, and she will not tell him to **** off. There is also no doubt in my mind that the classless and crass gnome will be in the president's office 24/7. I also believe that he will undermine her whenever and wherever he can. BUT, and this is a major but, I also believe that Martha Saunders KNOWS how to handle the likes of Shelby Thames and that she would have him before breakfast (in her classy and lady like manner). I am more worried about Nicholson as I trust him as far as I can throw him. He is simply another little person (emphasis on little) who is no longer a member of IHL and who is longing for his "powerful" days. I put the car dealers in this category as well. These people's strategy is: "Hey, if she does not toe the line ... we got rid of Fleming, we can get rid of her too."

Fom the phone calls that I have made, it is obvious that USM is getting a classy and QUALIFIED president and I am ecstatic that this being the case. Those brave souls who have stayed behind, deserve such a person. USM deserves such a president. I went through Babb's lists today. Between 02 and 06, 353 people left (yes I am one of them and it was the best thing I have ever done in my life) and then that classless gnome told everyone who wanted to listen, that he would like to be remember as "someone who made a difference." Yes Thames, you did make a difference, a disastrous one, but you don't have the savvy to see that.

I have one wish and that is that Dr Saunders will reinstate Glamser and Stringer (I know it is not an original thought as someone else has expressed that, but I echo that sentiment). I think this is very doable. I also wish that she would investigate the enormous increase of the salary of DT and restore it back to the level where it belongs -- however, I believe that is not going to happen.

The little voice inside of me (and I have learned over the years to listen to it) tells me that there are only better days ahead for the wonderful people at So Miss. What a pity that all of you, and USM, had to live through the destruction of the dome gnome. His days are numbered. I will not be in Hatties when y'all celebrate, but, trust me:
I WILL BE CELEBRATING WITH YOU, THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY.

It will be interesting to watch Dr. Saunders deal with Dr. Thames, and vice versa. Has Dr. Thames ever had a woman boss before?

I'm not sure he's ever had a boss.
