I am so very happy for USM today! I like this quote that I found on the Chancellor's Page at UW-W:

"We are the trustees of the public good. As such, we must acknowledge our role as models for the best of human behavior, and buffers for the worst. We must refine all our programs and processes toward that end because the work that we do here is the best chance any of us will ever have to change the world."--Martha Saunders

Can anyone imagine Shelboo saying something that coherent and forward thinking??? Where's her mention of "wurl' class" or "faculty millionaires" or whatever Next Stupid Thing that ole Shelboo thought made him sound "presidential?" I am so very thankful that USM will finally have a REAL university president again. The dark days are almost over!!

UW-W chief considered for Mississippi job

WHITEWATER-UW-Whitewater Chancellor Martha Saunders is the preferred candidate to become president of the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss.

In a message to UW-Whitewater staffers Tuesday, Saunders said it was an opportunity she "really must pursue."...

Many of us are relieved that the search process is nearly over. Even though it was not as open as many of us, including the Clarion Ledger, would have liked.

It appears that a well qualified person has been chosen. Only the Student Printz seems to have info on who the other candidates were for the position. How did they get the info?

Hopefully, when the candidate visits, she will not see things in such shambles that she will turn down the position. There is no way to go but UP!

It is also interesting to see the Georgia connection that she had. Did she know Tom Meredith while she was in the Georgia system? I hope she did and that he has complete confidence in her.

As one who desired a more open search, I commend those that participated in the process. You seem to have done as well as you could have, considering the ground rules that were set by the IHL.

I am sure that Martha had some connections to be able to get as far as she has. I also recognize that she is well qualified.

She even looks presidential.

It would be even better if she didn't have two former presidents around after she arrives. AKL will stay out of her way but old Shelboo will be a problem. If she could free up both of these positions it would certainly be helpful to our budget.

It will take her some time to clear out the SFT cronies. I hope that she had an understanding with TM that she has a free hand. Faculty members need to understand that this may take a while.

Rodriguez, the West Virginia coach, turned Alabama down at the last minute. We don't need this to happen to us. I hope someone has informed her regarding what has transpired here in the last five years and she has no surprises on April 5.

Was there a ranking of the candidates and if she does not accept or is not chosen, is there a #2 waiting in the wings?

I, for one, hope it all works out. We need to move on.

They made it up? Their list is wrong.

Who do you think they would have got if the car dealers and the boosters had helped?

Maybe she's smart and works hard. She's not rich folks.S

One of them, anyway.

When Fleming took over, Lucas had the class to take a one year sabbatical and travel extensively out of the country.

Lily girl:

The Student Printz did reveal Martha Saunders as a candidate on 3-27, prior to the announcement.

I assume that you did not see that story. So, the other names that the SP had, they made up.

I salute the SP for being able to scoop the CL, the HA, and others. I also recognize that their reporters have too "go along (with the IHL process) to get along."

Lily girl, don't get too defensive now, honey. It appears we have a good candidate.

73Novice, you can respond to people without being condescending. Sweetie.

However, it's not true that the Printz has to go along to get along. Student journalists are more free in many ways than others. There was a time not long ago when the Printz was the only free voice on campus.

Hey Rachel Q -- are you out there! That one was for you and those other great editors who preceded you.

And Kevin Walters . . . .

LVN, you are correct. I apoligize to Ms. Lily.

I would like to also clarify a comment that I made in my post. I was trying to say (with my poor writing skills) that the CL and HA reporters had to "go along to get along", not the SP reporters.

I agree that the student newspaper can be more independent. The CL and HA reporters will have to work with the IHL officials in the future and would be hesitant to not follow the IHL plan for the search process.

The SP had inside information and used it. The CL and HA probably had inside info and chose not to use it.

Oh, good grief. The Printz does have some latitude, I suppose. They printed rumor. They acknowledged that it was rumor. If I recall, the dang "list" was in an editorial or opinion piece, not a news story.

Editorial

They didn't make any names up. Those were the same names that I had been hearing around Hattiesburg for weeks, maybe months. Granted President Saunders's name had just been floated the last couple of weeks. But the rest were mentioned all the time.

Maybe, the commercial papers are less likely to publish rumors. I could sure understand it if they are.

Thanks for that.

I'm so excited about this news! A woman and a journalist. Who would have thought?!? I LOVE it!
