Why do you think this redneck newspaper is becoming the premier paper? Is it because the Hattiesburg American decided to start publishing real issues instead of the trivial complaints of former USM employees and their friends? It is because the editors of the Independent have not figured out yet that a handful of people are misusing the public opinions section of a backwoods city newspaper? There is nothing "premier" about this newspaper. "
Hey, OS--
Sure, Emma was expressing an opinion. It happens here.
Like you, I am hesitant to declare the Independent our premier newspaper. I'd go so far as to say we don't have a premier paper, except that in a race among lame horses, a lame horse is sure to win.
That said, I believe your third and fourth questions include some unsupported premises that would bear amplification, should you be inclined.
What are "the trivial complaints of former USM employees and their friends" to which you advert?
Who are the "handful of people" that "are misusing the public opinions section of a backwoods city newspaper"?
How does anyone "misuse" the opinions section of a newspaper, anyway; by saying something that is not really an opinion?

I have to agree with this one. I was at the “premier” Walmart on 49 at 7:30am and there was no Independent on sale. I was at the Shell station on Hardy at about 10am, and there was no Independent there. There is no website for this paper either, even though having one is cheap to do and takes little skill to operate.
Somebody please tell me where inside Hattiesburg I can get a copy of this “premier” newspaper.

Sorry I can't help you here. I get The Independent delivered to my home for about $15/year. They do seem to go more in depth than the H.A. and interview more people involved on an issue than the American. The H.A. seems to me to depend too much on the wire service and PR releases. However, I do know H.A. has a few hard working reporters, but I also think they may be held back by management.

Simba--
The Independent is a weekly. They were in the racks on Thursday, September 16. If you are looking for the article about the Business Week "rankings," don't waste your $.50; earlier posts on this thread include almost every word you will find in the article itself. If you just want a review copy, call 296-1872.
Boy, I'll bet Emma never dreamed so many people would have so much to say about the little modifier "premier."
Whoa!! I think I was using "premier" in a communist sort of way, but have to admit, the backlash has been kind of . . . well . . . fun. I think that differing viewpoints allow for illuminating conversation. I'll try to post again sometime in the same frame of mind!!!
