University of Southern Mississippi President Shelby Thames looked back over the highlights of a controversial five-year presidency that is coming to an end in early May.
“We’ve had a lot of discussions about me and my management practices over the years, but when you make decisions and are successful, that’s what really counts,” Thames told members of the Area Development Partnership this morning...
Among the highlights, he noted a more efficient administration, an increase in faculty salaries, increased honor student enrollment, over $130 million in capital improvement projects and additional research dollars.
WARNING: Historical reconstruction underway!
"More efficient administration" -- as measured, perhaps, by the wrenching SACS probation?
"Increase in faculty salaries" -- is the president confusing "faculty" with "cronies" here?
"Increased honor student enrollment" -- uh, Ken Panton, anyone? And whatever happened to the mantra of "20,000 students"?
"Capital improvement projects" -- nice, perhaps, but at the price of what? Massive outsourcing? Curtailed library acquisitions? Ripping faculty lines away from Psychology? And a heaping dose of help from Katrina-related funds.
"Additional research dollars" -- because faculty have been inspired by the sterling example of SFT? Somebody might want to check closely into the way Sponsored Programs "books" external funding. But, then, everyone has confidence in the accuracy of this administration's numbers!
