Small world phenomenon From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to: navigation, search

The small world phenomenon (also known as the small world effect) is the hypothesis that everyone in the world can be reached through a short chain of social acquaintances. The concept gave rise to the famous phrase six degrees of separation after a 1967 small world experiment by social psychologist Stanley Milgram which suggested that two random US citizens were connected on average by a chain of six acquaintances.

If this be so, who else are they connected with?

She's a graduate student in CISE.  Like most all of the grad students over there, her assistantship reports to Dr. D. Thames.  There's nothing sinister here.

Perhaps not, and a student cannot choose his or her chair. But I think the point is that this can lead to all sorts of conflicts (or at the least the appearance of conflicts). If we had a culture sensitive to such issues, reasonable accomodations can be made for a student in this situation (it would be wrong to penalize a student in this situation). However, we have had several key folks in management who are largely clueless about dual relationships, and my guess is that is why EMMA posted the comment--it is the mark of USM circa 2002-2007.

But, a chair can pick and choose, as well as reward or punish, graduate assistants.
