Search for new USM president winding down

The state College Board is moving into the final stages of the search for the next president of the University of Southern Mississippi, and a few campus constituents will join them.

The board announced Friday the names of seven faculty, staff, students and alumni who will sit in on candidate interviews....

..."We don't have a vote, though," Fos said. "Our committee will not have any further active role in the selection."...

Does that mean that they can't even express an opinion from the perspective of their expertise and experience? That would amount to zero input from the university community.

The article also indicates that the group will likely have input in the discussions.

That the Board hires the President should be no suprise -- after all, it hires everyone including faculty at the departmental level. The issue is the degree to which the CAB influences the discussions. Given the makeup of this group, I,d say the IHL will take what they have to say seriously.

This isn't a perfect process -- but faculty have had a significant impact on improving the search process over the State search. If you consider that the CAB submitted the initial list of names (anywhere from 7-10 most likely) and that at leats two will probably fall to the bottom of the list quickly after more inquiry, this means that the CAB has pre selected the top 5-8 candidates before the Board even has any input. That is quite powerful role -- particularly remembering that 11 faculty (not counting Deans) were involved.

I think we just need to hang in there and have faith that our people will find ways to express the fairly universal sentiments the have been made campus wide about the kind of President it wants.

Stephen is correct. The quote below from the HA piece is very encouraging.

"We participate in the interviews and observe, and it's my assumption we'll probably be able to ask questions and talk to the board about our impressions," said Peter Fos, dean of the College of Health who chaired the 25-member, campus-based Search Advisory Committee and is one of the seven members who will continue on through the process.
