Board OKs degree programs
. No action taken on uniform state policy regarding alcohol

New degree programs in construction, criminal justice and social work received state College Board approval Wednesday....

...Despite similar programs at other Mississippi institutions, board members unanimously endorsed:

. A bachelor's degree program in building construction science within the College of Architecture, Art and Design at Mississippi State University.

. A master of criminal justice and master of social work, both at the University of Mississippi.

University of Southern Mississippi officials recently told board officials they felt the proposed MSU program closely resembled one that has been around for years on the Hattiesburg campus.

"We felt it was unnecessary duplication and continue to feel that way," USM Provost Jay Grimes said after the meeting at the Universities Center. "But now it is the decision of the board," Grimes said.

It will be a case of two institutions trying to attract students with their marketing campaigns, Grimes added....

As a practical matter, most students at USM don't look very hard at State and Ole Miss so this should not affect enrollment very much. On the other hand it shows how little influence Grimes, Thames and USM have with the Board. It also shows where we are headed.

It's interesting to note that the Ole Miss criminal justice program is focused on homeland security and law enforcement at just the right time. The USM CJ program had a similar focus and was by far the dominant program in the state when Thames unilaterally moved CJ to the College of Science and Technology to focus on forensics. What a disaster.

Two areas in which USM enjoyed dominance when Thames took over are nursing and the arts, and he promptly reduced their visibility by taking away their college status. Since then, Ole Miss has started an undergraduate nursing program in Oxford. Can the arts be far behind?

As the conspiracy theorists on this board have said for years, Thames is the best thing that could have happened for State and Ole Miss.

My husband has said all along that Thames was named as the President of USM to bring the university down.

Unfortunately in past couple of years, I have begun to believe it, too!
