Mississippi University for Women President Claudia Limbert is trying to seize control of the school's independent alumni association by dictating its by-laws, MUW supporters charged Thursday.
"We are not aware of any other association in the state being asked to surrender their independent status,'' said MUW National Alumni Association President Betty Lou Jones of Meridian.
What Limbert hopes to do "is a disgraceful attempt'' to end two months of negotiations between the association and her office to craft a new agreement for the next five years, Jones said....
...Ricki Garrett of Clinton, a past president of the organization.
Garrett, a former state College Board member, said she hopes the board intervenes to prevent the changes Limbert is proposing.
The issue has come to the attention of state lawmakers, who met at the Capitol on Thursday with MUW alumni leaders and Mississippi Higher Education Commissioner Tom Meredith.
Some MUW graduates have asked Meredith to step in and settle the dispute. But he's not going to mediate, said College Board spokeswoman Annie Mitchell.
It is a campus matter that needs to be decided locally, she said....

JACKSON - Mississippi University for Women President Claudia Limbert is planning to sever ties with the MUW Alumnae Association because they can't agree on a new constitution governing how the group works on behalf of the school and its former students.
The dispute - a continuation of last year's clash between Limbert and alumni leaders - is over how independent the association should be from the university.
“This is a transparent, punitive maneuver by Dr. Limbert to silence the voices of her critics,” said MUWAA President Betty Lou Jones of Meridian....

JACKSON -- Mississippi University for Women is breaking up with its 117-year-old alumni group and forming a new one because current association leaders tried to get MUW President Claudia Limbert fired and wanted to sue the university's fund-raising arm.
According to a report issued Friday by the university, the MUW Alumnae Association is run by renegades....
MUW flap stirs recall of 'terror' in Capitol By Sid Salter
One of the most interesting days I ever observed at the state Capitol was Mississippi University for Women alumnae invading the old marble building back in the 1980s to do battle with legislators who dared discuss closing or merging the university.
Older legislators don't have to be reminded. I've told the story often of seeing several legislators literally hiding from the "W" alums - many who were literally the proverbial little old blue-haired ladies in tennis shoes....
...The flap pits the "W" Alumni Association, Limbert and state Higher Education Commissioner Tom Meredith - and every politician a "W" alum can buttonhole - in what appears to be a protracted battle....
The Mississippi University for Women battle between President Claudia Limbert and some factions of the MUW Alumni Association is escalating.
The following notice went to faculty members today from Faculty Senate President Tom Velek:
"This provides notice that the MUW Faculty Senate will be holding a special session to consider the recent announcements regarding the relationship between MUW and the Alumnae Association. The special session will be held Friday Feb.9th at 12.15 in the second floor conference room in Martin Hall. All interested faculty are invited to attend."
Faculty sources say the issues surrounding the meeting are related at least in part to Limbert's support for former "W" administrator Scott Rawles, who resigned his post after Limbert's battle with former Alumni Association employees Patsy McDaniel and Tracey Ervin was underway.
MUW faculty to discuss proposed changes to alumni association
Mississippi University for Women’s Faculty Senate will meet Friday to discuss proposed changes for the school’s alumni association.
Some critics believe MUW President Claudia Limbert is trying to seize control of the independent association by dictating its by-laws. Limbert says that’s not the case and she seeks to improve the organization....
Mississippi University for Women graduates who don't want their alumni association changed will rally at the Capitol on Tuesday.
The event is dubbed an "I love the W day," with alumni to visit the Senate at 10 a.m. and the House at 2 p.m. They will also thank lawmakers for their support of the Columbus school....
