Unbelievable, a complete meltdown of the nerve system of a university - nothing working on campus, internet, wireless, email, SOAR, 911, phones... This is obviously either a sign of the incompetentancy that has brought Southern Miss to being an almost sub-Tier IV university or one could perhaps think of something more nefarious a play during the closing days of the Thames regime. It is not too unimaginable that the Dome Gnome selected USM.edu and hit the delete key.
At least they now have access available to the outside, hopefully something will be up for the start of classes.

PS - It is quite fitting that the ITECH website system status page shows the entire system "Functioning normally".
I agree that things were bad yesterday, but folks rallied to get late students enrolled, etc. Some hours back, I was able to print out class rosters, and perhaps an hour ago to get on webmail. I just went back on to check. So, the system is indeed back up.
I'm not sure I'd go with a conspiracy theory. It has been known for quite some time that the system was aging, underfunded, and had insufficient depth and redundancy. This outage was perhaps a useful wake-up call.
The new Itech folks (Homer, William and other folks) are really pretty good and are working hard to keep a difficult system up and going -- something they inherited. Really, when you see the data on how much traffic there is (and how much spam actually is blocked by the system) it is astounding.
They are working hard to upgrade -- but are limited in terms of how fast they can go ($$$).
I ran into some of them today over at JavaWerks as they were getting ready to go back and work on the system. One of the guys was explaining to me what happened (I didn't much understand it) -- but apparently they know what happened but not why. Apparently there were quite a few people working over yesterday and the weekend to get things working again --
I have to agree with Jameela and Stephen--I-tech is doing the best is can under the circumstances. I know people who sat in the meetings on Friday trying to figure out how to best handle the problem, given a preview session. The priority was getting students enrolled. Stephen is correct--they know what caused the problem but not why. People from Cisco Systems and IBM were on campus helping to diagnose the problem. Folks were working today, and I suspect all weekend, to get things up and running.
In short, it's not incompetency on the part of I-tech.

Never meant to indict Homer and the ITECH crew - the incompetency is at the top. From there resources, attention and effort were expended to support his daughter, his polyhome and his cronies or to pursue persecution of those thought to have slighted any of the cabal in the any small way. Had that level of attention, funding and effort been spent on the university as a whole who knows where we would be. Instead he drove away any who showed ability in spite of their contribution.
Apologies again to the ITECH crew, and thanks for their hard efforts.

Obviousman glad you dont think the CIO is at the top. I guess this means he is not responsible for the technology on campus but the president is?
If I remember correctly most of the equipment running the campus has been purchased in the last few years. If I could get to www.usm.edu I might have been able to verify this.
I have no doubt that the people in iTech are doing their best to get things up and running.
