1/12/2007 (Jackson, Miss. )
The Institutions of Higher Learning's (IHL) 2007 Experts Guide is now available online to connect members of the media and general public with Mississippi's public university faculty, staff, and administration experts. The 2007 Experts Guide is the product of a collaboration between the university relations offices at Mississippi's public universities and the IHL Office of Media Relations, Communications, and Marketing.
"IHL has outstanding faculty and staff who are able to articulate information that is beneficial to the citizens of Mississippi," said Dr. Thomas C. Meredith, Commissioner of Higher Education. "The Experts Guide is an excellent resource to provide the media and other interested citizens with highly qualified academicians who are experts in their fields."
The 2007 Experts Guide includes more than 250 topics ranging from accounting to zoology and is completely searchable by the subjects listed in the table of contents. Click here to view the 2007 Experts Guide, also available on the IHL website.
Thanks for the numbers, info. Just from glancing at the list earlier, I had noticed that DSU was heavily represented and USM seemed to be under-represented. Does anyone know where the names on the list came from??

I remember an e-mail awhile back from one of our vice or assistant grand pooh bahs asking for similiar information, but it wasn't clear to me from the e-mail if exactlly how this information would be used. And being a bit skittish about how these folks have used information in the past, I did not respond. I think a whole bunch of us must have passed this e-mail by, thinking it was just more administrative spam.
Well, fooled me! Looks like USM's psychology department, which has lots of true experts, is not represented (except for one person). Ole Miss also is absent. Also, I couldn't find Dr. Shelby Thames (love 'em or hate 'em, he is a quite knowledgable about the polymer biz). We also have some real experts in education (Mike Ward and John Rachel come to mind), who aren't there. And some of the names there from other institutions (sorry guys), are probably viewed as experts by a limited circle (such as relatives or close friends).
If the IHL wanted to do this job right and establish a list of true experts, Dr. Meredith probably should have put his name to a direct request, and self-nominations should have been accompanied by CVs for a quick review by IHL staff or some peer review approach. I suspect that some who claim an area of "expertise" on the list are better served by conceptualizing this as an "area of interest."

"The 2007 Experts Guide is the product of a collaboration between the university relations offices at Mississippi's public universities and the IHL Office of Media Relations, Communications, and Marketing." = USM's PR office gave it to the IHL. As Godless Liberal says, the administration asked faculty to identify themselves as experts.
Interesting that the President is not listed as an expert in Polymer Science, and that only two of the touted faculty are there - Bob Lochhead who volunteers for everything and their Director Supremo (that is one heck of a pompous credit line he is giving himself).
One would guess from this list, that Southern's most expert field appears to be Coastal Sciences. Yippee!
I noticed that our COH head dentist Fos is USM's expert in Community Health. How come Madame Xline isn't listed as our expert? Isn't she the queen of community health?
9 from department of marine sciences and 9 from department of coastal sciences
