The letter writer is John Ower, the retired faculty member (not from USM, I believe) who wrote the letter to The Chronicle earlier in the summer (spring?).
Dr. Ower's letter is a model of its kind -- full of facts, reasonable in tone, and extremely well written. I commend him for his continued efforts to help people in Hattiesburg and elsewhere understand the sad events that have befallen USM.
By the way, I hope that the student newspaper (the real one, not the Varsity Voice) gives full coverage to the drop in USM ranking; has the first issue of the new term been printed yet?

USM Symp, go to the "Hudson Reception" thread for more info. Apparently, they are working to teach the new students how to update the webpage...should be up soon (many thanks to Maggie Williams for all of her work with those students...hope you got a merit raise, Maggie!).
