The word "world" seems to be the cornerstone of USM - "world class" and now "world showpiece." It even overshadows the term "economic development" which seems to be almost catching up and is now almost nose to nose:
"We absolutely remain committed to making this happen," she said. "Economic development is a cornerstone of this institution. The programs we offer are unique. This is a worldshowpiece, not only for the facility, but for what it means to Mississippi." [From today's HA article]:
I'm confused about this whole project. What is it supposed to DO? Specifically, what will it do that cannot be done now with USM's libraries, technology and space already in existence? No funny answere this time, please (I can think of a bunch myself!)

No funny answers, LVN. No poster would even dare think of that. Nobody will say that the building will serve as a training site for future urban archaeology students to dig beneath the remains. Nobody will say that the building will provide yet another stop for the Hattiesburg Greyline tour. Only serious answers will be given to your question. My answer is that it is, first and foremost, a tribute to Trent Lott.

Of course, the "she" here refers to the ubiquitous Lisa Mader.
My question is this: does saying something is a "cornerstone" of an instituion make it so? Does saying that the programs offered are "unique" make it so? What does that 4th sentence mean: the Trent Lott Center is a world showpiece for itself as well as for Mississippi??? That sounds more local than global. There are no hard figures to back up any of this. Worl'-class smoke and mirrors game is more like it.
My spouse who does not now and has never had any connection whatsoever with USM, but is very conversant with the academic values and management of universities elsewhere, laughs everytime she reads this board. I asked if she is laughing at us or with us. She replied that she is laughing at the inept way the place is run.
