"Message from iTech Regarding Network Outage on Tuesday, Dec. 5
Last Tuesday around 9:45 p.m., iTech noticed an outage on the edge routers that ultimately caused a service outage for the entire Hattiesburg campus. The networking team worked through the night to repair the network. The data center team was contacted to check critical systems and interfaces. We know that we had equipment failure at the core network switch at west football stadium. We had similar outage last Sunday. The system redundant features in our network failed. We have identified the equipment which failed but are still investigating why the failure occurred. There is a possibility that another outage could occur at any time. I have requested a CISCO engineer to conduct a complete system diagnostic ASAP. I have created a team to conduct an inquiry into how this outage occurred and how we can prevent future failures of this magnitude. I will provide the IT Board of Directors a copy of the inquiry once it is complete. This outage affected all police department systems, phone systems and 911 at the Gulf Coast campus, e-mail, Internet access, SOAR, SOARFIN, the Data Center, library systems, Barnes & Noble, Aramark systems, WebCT, TMA, RMS, wireless, and more. Basically, all computer operations were interrupted. iTech will keep you posted on any new developments."
