Bud Holmes, SFT backer and convicted felon, speaks again!
"All of us were unanimous that we all love the university and want very much to support the university," said Bud Holmes, a longtime Southern Miss backer. "We all acknowledged that we're in a partnership with each other. It's all one family."

I am going to vote come November 2. Bond issue will be on ballot. The obvious path of least resistance is: "If SFT is for it, I will vote against it." The adult in me says, "Oh, grow up."
I don't know squat about bond issue. Linked article (redacted of "personality" quotes) leaves me not much better off:
1. $12 million plan to upgrade athletic facilities at the University of Southern Mississippi.
And what facilities might those be? Is this the infamous airboxes or skyhooks or whatever in the always lovely and usually half empty football stadium?
2. Operation No Not Now (organized) to defeat the Southern Miss bond issue and then work for passage of a $60 million bond issue proposed by (the Hattiesburg Mayor). The larger plan would include the Southern Miss work as well as numerous projects in eastern Hattiesburg. . . .If that was the case, the university would support the mayor's effort."
So there is a second plan on the drawing board for 60 million that will do what plan "A" does plus more? But there ain't no way that is going to get city council approval, legislative approval and onto the ballot by this November. I can't see how plan "B" is anything but a spoiler: it's not up for a vote, but it can kill the issue that is on the ballot.
3. If 60 percent of the voters approve the Southern Miss bond issue, a one-cent tax will be added to hotel and restaurant bills.
Okay, since I live here, 1% on my local hotel bill is no issue at all. 1% on my restaurant bill really won't pinch, but I would like to know what it is buying.
4. DuPree's proposal, which the City Council did not approve, called for a one-cent sales tax increase and would require legislative authorization.
This is plan "B" right? Same 1%, but apparently on ALL sales, not just hotel and restaurant. That pinches a little more. But wait a minute. The city council did not approve. It would require legislative authorization? This horse may not be dead, but it sure smells funny.
I need more info. There are people on both sides of this that I think are bad, bad boys. No body is getting my vote by association on this one.
The committee that is trying to get this thing passed is dropping the ball as far as I am concerned. I expect that more than 60% of the voters are going to do like me and just vote "no" unless somebody gives us a good reason to do otherwise.
I really would welcome any light (no heat, thank you) that can be brought to this matter.
ram, what galls me about the bond issue is that it includes usm athletic improvements and projects in east hattiesburg. It is very poorly conceived bond proposal. Combining two very diverse proposals is an old trick used in congress: place one action on the same proposal in order to generate sufficient votes for one of primary interest to pass. I would hope the voters of Hatiesburg have more sense to fall for that old trick.

MPR--
I understand you're comments to relate to Mayor Dupree's proposed bond issue -- the one I called "plan B" in my earlier post -- the $60 million plan -- the one that does not yet have approval of the city council or the state legislature-- the one that WILL NOT be on the ballot November 2nd.
I'd have to agree: it is an old trick. But in this case, I just cannot figure who is being tricked and into what.
Because the bond issue is a City of Hattiesburg vote, many voters will have to vote at two locations; one for the presidential and congressional races and another for the city held bond referendum. If it is important to you to vote on both (and, imho, it is), then you need to find out before November if your city polling location is the same or different than your county polling place. (The counties are the responsible entity in the presidential/congressional/state races.)

ram,
I am not absolutely sure about that either. My guess, however, is that USM or some component thereof is the tricker and the community, taxpayers, and visitors to Hattiesburg are the trickees.

Sounds as complicated as it is in Florida. How does it work for proxy voters?
Why, yes, I seem to recall someone named Dr. Mader Math Revisited, who took advantage of the intensive ,credit for life experience, online PhD in Economic Development in the area of Facile Numerology. A brilliant analyst. I imagine the last analysis of Lisa Mader speak that he undertook (the University rankings...third tier..proud to be rated with Michigan.... and all that) has caused Dr. MMR to blow a fuse. He/she probably needs to rest for awhile.
I'm a member of the Screen Actors Guild. Thus, I am in contention for an Academy Award with fellow members Tom Cruise, Sean Penn, Tom Hanks, Dustin Hoffman etc. I am proud to be considered amongst this group of well qualified actors. I am a worl' class actor.
John, I have acted in some forgettable movies, but by golly - I'm a member of the SAG too, so I'm proud to announce that I am in contention for an Oscar and am pitted against women such as Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow, Julianne Moore, Halle Berry, and Diane Keaton. I'm a worl' class actress and feel like I am equally as wonderful as all the women I've mentioned.
I'm a Carnegie 1 intensive actress and former model. I've done my research on this assertion.
Your credentials are impressive. And do we have a possible deal for you! In the future there may be a wur'l class movie made about 2004 events at a wur'l class university in Mississippi. It could be a comedy. It could be a tragedy. Some weeks ago nominations were made for the various roles. I have forwarded your credentials to the appropriate office which will be in contact with you to scheule an audition should you be deemed suitable for any of the roles. I must warn you, however, that competition for a part in that movie is keen.
Thank you so much for your speedy response!! John (of General Hospital and Full House fame) has a varied background in dealing with dysfunctional families. Rebecca (of forgettable B movies and Victoria Secret shoots) has a background in dealing with John. In other words, they're perfect!! Since you all said (basically) that it's worl' class - no need to question that -- if they're in the mix of consideration then THEY'RE worl' class too. Whew. No sweat in that dept. And, I can't speak completely for John, but I think Rebecca can be a shoe-in for a Worl' SHOWPIECE too. Lots of press coverage there -- good or bad -- who cares -- it's press coverage.
They might be divorcing, but they know where their bread is buttered
