The Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) invites nominations and applications for the position of President of the University of Southern Mississippi.

Founded in 1910, the University of Southern Mississippi is a Carnegie Research Extensive University (with high research). Southern Miss has an enrollment of 15,000. There are 3,200 employees including over 700 full-time faculty. The full-time faculty to full-time student ratio is 1:18. In 2002, Southern Miss admitted its first class of freshmen on its Gulf Park campus, making the University the only comprehensive university in the state with dual-campus status.

The University is comprised of the College of Arts & Letters; the College of Business; the College of Education and Psychology; the College of Health; and the College of Science and Technology. Southern Miss offers 80 undergraduate degree programs, 65 master's degree programs, two specialist's degree programs, and 29 doctoral degree programs. Southern Miss is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and is a member of the Conference USA (C-USA) athletic conference.

Southern Miss is located in Hattiesburg, the fourth largest city in the state with a population of nearly 50,000. Hattiesburg is centrally located less than 90 minutes from New Orleans, Louisiana; Mobile, Alabama; the Gulf Coast and Jackson, Mississippi. (www.hattiesburgms.com)

The President of Southern Miss is the chief operating officer and is accountable to the Commissioner of Higher Education at IHL. The President will provide leadership and vision for the University. The President will be expected to build effective relationships within the community and the state, increase philanthropic giving, and foster a diverse learning environment. The operating budget for the University is more than $221 million in 2007 and the research budget is approximately $112.9 million. The successful candidate will be a consensus builder with significant administrative, fundraising, and academic experience, including a terminal degree and a distinguished record of teaching and research. The successful candidate must be able to develop a culture of trust and confidence and foster the success of others as he/she builds a vision with grassroots involvement. The President must be a person of personal and professional integrity.

"is comprised of"? "high research"? You would think such an important ad might be proofed a little better before it goes to print...

I wish people would just swear off the word "comprise" -- it's hardly ever used correctly. Just say "consists of" or something.

These statements comprise my grammar advice for today.

Wait -- they spelled "consensus" correctly, which I hardly ever do.

Actually the classification is "RU/H: Research Universities (high research activity)". The "Carnegie Research Extensive University" is no longer used - obviously someone forgot to check the Carnegie Foundation books since 2000.

OM--so true on checking the carnegie designations. they could have included our SREB designation, which does make us relatively unique in the state. but, who cares?

Another question arises from the 113 million research budget. Obviously Shelboo pulled out all of the stops , swept out the closets and called in all types of favors (and marks) to get to he well trumpted $100,000,000.01. Did a mysterious benefactor kick in 13 mill? Thought we would have heard about it.

OM

btw - the Carnegie Foundation was able to document 33 mil in research funds for USM vs the "100 mil" in shelboo's mind.
