Even if that figure includes a mid-year raise, lots of secretaries don't make much more than $11,000. (On the other hand, lots of secretaries make less than some graduate assistants).

You are absolutely right. I've often thought that if all the secretaries/admin. assistants at USM would just have the "blue flu" one day, the whole place would shut down, and perhaps someone would finally give them the raises they deserve! I'm appalled at the non-living wages paid to these loyal USM employess. So many of them are women (and single moms, too!) who have done a fabulous job raising families on such pitiful salaries. SFT (and AKL & HF, too) should be ashamed of this discrepancy in salaries at USM.

I would not include Horace Fleming in that group. USM had a marvelous opportunity when he was president. His national perspective was more akin to those found at other major universities which subscribe to the academic principles to which I believe this board is devoted. I have yet to hear one good reason why he was given such an unaccetable contract at the end.

USM's computer capabilities were pretty primitive when Fleming arrived at USM. All I heard during the time he was here, however, was that he was devoting too many resources toward upgrading them. Strange indeed.

I think, as a group, they would enjoy it more if they had a case of the ever-popular "honky tonk flu"
My own undergrad degree was completed 2 semesters earlier because a secretary -- not my advisor or the department chair -- noticed that I needed an art class to complete degree requirements. A lot of departments could do pretty well without a department chair, if the faculty had a top-notch "executive" type secretary.

I thought the world of HF, and I'm not knocking him, but significant raises for staff just didn't happen on his watch. He did do a great deal for USM, technology-wise and otherwise. I never had a problem with his committment to technology because I used the old BULL system, and hated it!
Also, does anyone else remember back in the mid-90s when the old Academic Computing center (which I think was under the VPAA's umbrella at that time) sent out the memo stating that they would no longer support staff members computers--only faculty members??? I think it was probably a ploy to get more $$ (which I'm sure they legitimately needed), but it scared the heck out of all of us staff for sure!

I remember it well At that time, the secretaries/staff should have said, "Let the faculty do their own word processing."

I attended USM.
When the secretary brought things to my attention, I thought I had 2 more semesters remaining on my degree. As it was, I completed my BS in three calendar years by going summers.
I've seen no complaints about the most recent merit raises after they were announced. I take this to mean that most of the recipients are reasonably satisfied.
