"The 2003 "open" search for the USM president allowed a few powerful individuals to exert undue influence on the search process - perhaps the only time in Mississippi history that a president was forced on a university in the face of widespread campus opposition.
That mistake cost the College Board credibility with many at USM but recent changes in membership and governance may mark a new direction. The improved board seems to have a clearer sense of mission and a reluctance to influence internal university policy processes."
