refuse the raises!

Colleagues--

I've given some thought to this, and I have what seems a strong idea. Let those of us who take extreme exception to the present administration and its policies, and to the way the university has been operating for the last two years, and to the capricious nature of Thames and his cohorts, refuse to accept our raises, whatever they may be.  Let us either force the administration to keep our salaries as they were, or write checks to the university each month in whatever amts our raises are, or write checks to other universities or charities. Let us not take this blood money that Thames is trying to force on us.

This will send a clear signal to the IHL about how grave our situation continues to be here.

I understand that IHL may not care, or may, indeed, want things at USM running just as they are, but the stand is substantial and bound to get a great deal of attention if all of us (or many of us) participate. We can make this raise count for something after all!

Perhaps there's even a better way--someone here can think of something to do with the money that both snubs Thames and his administration, and does some good for others.

It's a gesture, sure, but it's not an empty gesture.  It's not "just talk," and it's certainly can't be seen as capitulation.

What is the status of the Glamser-Stringer scholarship fund? You could donate your raise to it, and it would go to a worthy student, not back to the administration.

Take your raises. Be happy. Everything else will work out.

There's no point in cutting off noses to spite the face.  Those of us in education - at any level - know that we are not paid what we are worth.  And contrary to popular opinion, we didn't go into education for the summer vacations, the short work day (8 to 3 - how tiring can that be?), the wonderful benefits, or the fantastic working conditions.

Although, I must admit, donating to the scholarship fund does have a certain bit of class to it.

How does this work?  You write a memo to personnel, human resources, whatever, and say I don't want the raise, give it to charity.  Then they say okay, amend your pay records, send a copy of your memo to IHL and SFT saying "Please note the statement that this person is making?"  Maybe they will mail a copy to the Clarion Ledger and a few other papers too, just so the public at large can be reminded how people in ivory towers live.

Noble sentiments, doughnut2, but bad idea.  Too many people are already (wrongly) convinced that USM professors are overpaid.  The message would be lost, along with any momentum toward equity.

NO QUARTER.

Good idea.  Just put it back in the pool to distribute to the underpaid staff.

If everyone would pool the $2.5 mil and hire a great attorney to conduct a class-action lawsuit against the admin and the state of MS (IHL), this would mean something.  "No quarter" would take on a whole new meaning.  Keep your quarter!
