I am amazed at how many grown men are sitting around crybabying about how badly upper management is treating them at the place they work.

If you dont like it so much, go find another place to work.  Thats the way it works in America.

All this is just sad.

Delete this post if you must, but you will only be guilty of the one thing youre blaming Shelby Thames for.

I am sure that nobody is going to delete your post. Such is not the way of higher education in America. Your post does suggest that much is lacking in your understanding of the nature of universities.

Oh, I understand the nature of Universities.  Professors feel as if they are on a higher plane of existence and actually think they are qualified to be a university administrator.

Your job is to teach the subject in which you were hired to teach within the ruleset that was given to you.  Then you go home.

Daman - think with your brain. If you feel faculty should continue to stay in their roles as faculty members and not question upper administration, please bare in mind the ranks that most of the current admin. rose from. SFT?  Faculty member. Former admin.? Got bumped back to faculty when he couldn't run a clean program. Get real.

Obviously, you understand neither the nature of universities, nor the job of professors.

According to my USM contract, teaching accounted for 40% of my time.

DeMan, you just contradicted yourself. You said .."I understand the nature of Universities.." And then you make a statement that proves you don't.

"Your job is to teach the subject in which you were hired to teach within the ruleset that was given to you. Then you go home."

Thanks, it sure makes rebutting your post a lot easier.

I am referring to the Once and Future Administrator when I raise the question of Former Admin. I mean SFT and nobody else.

Oh what a great life we would all have if we were only expected to work 40% of our actual 8 hour day.

Then we could all spend the other 60% trying to crucify our boss.

This obviously seems to be the case at USM.

I am ashamed to have graduated from USM, not because of Shelby Thames, but because of the manner in which the faculty is conducting themselves as a whole.  It is downright embarrassing.

Go home? You gotta be kidding. The more you post, the more your lack of understanding becomes apparent. Faculty members don't "work to contract" like in industry. Faculty members don't "go home" after class. They work "until the work is done." Nights. Weekends. Holidays. And with no overtime pay. Moreover, their job is not limited to "teaching." Just as lawyers spend a relatively a small part of their time in the courtroom, a university professor has many places to spend their working hours other than in the classroom.  In the research laboratory. In their offices advising students. In the library. At home preparing lectures. Writing grants. After all these years, you are the first to suggest that a university professor should teach their class and "go home." I've never heard a student who would agree with you on that point.

DaMan,

There have been some very ignorant postings on this message board from drones, clones, moles, and trolls. Yours, however, takes the cake.

Do ya think LM needs to use this in her PR for da university?

Some time back I was an adjunct asst. prof of English at another university. I also worked full time for the university in a staff capacity. I was paid about $20 hr for the three hours a week I spent in front of a class. As an adjunct, not a regular professor, I worked 12-20 hours a week, preparing lectures, grading papers, and working with students. Students thought nothing of calling me at home, and I thought nothing of helping them when they did call. And that was one class of 35 students. Regular professors do that for as many as three classes, sometimes huge classes, plus are expected to publish articles and books, serve on committees, and do a ton of other administrative work that can't be adequately described. If this poster actually graduated from USM, did he ever visit a professor during office hours? Did he ever ask for a make-up exam? Did he ever request a letter of recommendation? Go home indeed!

DaMan, I've been thinking about what you said. Could it be that you are one of those students who, for whatever reason, left campus immediately after class and were not around enough to know what a university is all about? There are students like that, and I don't fault those who must leave campus and head for an off-campus job or to take care of a member of their family who might ill.  But there are some (maybe like you?) who never really availed themselves of the marvelous opportunities that exist on a university campus after class hours. Talking informally with your professors in their offices or at the hub, for instance. The best part of a college education occurs outside the classroom. I do hope that what you suggest for the professors (leave campus after class) did not pertain to you.

You are describing Shelby Thames to a "T". The only qualification he ever had to be a university administrator was that he was a professor. And the only qualification he ever had to be a university president was that he was an unsuccessful administrator. What he had going for him was a little threat to take his grant money & go somewhere else. I just wish AKL had had the intestinal fortitude to say, "There's the door, bubba." But he didn't...

DaMan,

I'm "amazed" at how little you know about the nature of universities.  I'm "flabbergasted"  by your post indicating that one faculty member only worked 40% (teaching), and also "dumbfounded" that you did not understand that 60% of their duties included research/service/administration.

I think you should understand we are not complaining about this administration because we have nothing better to do, we have serious concerns and we question some of the decisions this administration has made, especially when it comes to nepotism and terminating individuals who have been productive, conducted research and secured grants (and I'm not just talking about Gary S and Frank G).

Since the Kenbot has three jobs, does that mean he gets to "crucify his boss" 180% of the time?

What if Daman was not a USM alum from the community, but just someone out to get a response from board members?

Does he deserve a response even if his intent is simply to raise people's ire, and does not harbor a genuine belief that faculty are lazy?

It's up to you, if you think it's worth your time to deal with someone who is probably impersonating the stereotypical Thames supporter. Just a thought.

What If,

After reading your posting, I scrolled back and reread DaMan's two postings. I am now inclined to believe that you are correct. The two postings by DaMan are so terribly unsophisticated that I find it difficult to believe that any college graduate would be that uninformed. DaMan's statements do sound like spoofs - impersonations of the sterotypical supporter. Reading DaMan's postings within that context, they actually appear humorous. Maybe they were intended to be that way. Boy do I feel suckered in!

Joker,

Yes, I saw your posting. But, while well intentioned, the way your phrased it was about as obscure to me as some of the postings by Chess (also well intentioned). It appears that you were on to DaMan before the rest of us. But I was not the only one who was duped! Would Joker and DaMan be the same?

Please don't insult Joker.

I just guessed DaMan couldn't be for real. At least, I hoped no one is that ignorant of a professor’s work and the university in general.

Dear MMR,

It appears that that Phd in Economic Development Numerology (did I get that right?)  has really come in handy!  Your way with numbers is astounding!   I may have to sign up soon, as I am doing a statistical analysis and need to make sure my hypotheses all come out the way they oughta.  I'm shootin for the big MIDAS bucks next year, you know!   May be I should have written you in as a consultant.

I am so impressed that you remembered, thank you.  Perhaps you have seen my name recently as I have been doing a little consulting work for Mal, Vic and Miss I.  My expertise has also been requested up in Jackson to help with the statewide virtual 079 (prerequisite to 099) math preparation module.  During my week long PhD program earlier this summer, I excelled in the on-line course called RESUME PADDING for FUTURE JOB SNOWBALLERS taught by On-line Prof (who was substituting for the secretary of the team that was originally supposed to teach it - evidently OP offered to teach the course for free).  So, I should be well-prepared to juggle your project as well as the other two (and of course my new adjunct job at USM - they have asked me to teach English 101 - can you believe it?)  Count me in for your grant project.  Now, just to warn you, I have thrown my name into the hat for that ADP job that just came open...

No, my friend, the way it works in America is to organize - join a union - enforce standards of managerial behavior.  Your idea would make the 19th century robber barons (and our new Republican robber trust fund babies) proud.  Workers will fight your view to the end.  To expect less is downright un-American.

Kenbot may now be up to 240%.  Heard he will announce his new Executive MBA on the coast next week.  Dr. MMR, if you are a polymer chemist please apply for a faculty position -- no business training necessary to teach!

No 3, I am not a polymer chemist but I do have my PhD in Economic Development Numerology and I am certainly as qualified to teach in an Executive MBA program sponsored by the KenBot on the coast as I am to teach English 101 in Hattiesburg.  Sign me up.  Hey Phoenix, that's five...I'm snowballin' now - this is even easier than I was told it would be.

Wait a minute, I've been burned before.   Is there really an Executive MBA program on the coast?  Has it been approved by all of the proper faculty committees?  Is it an accredited program?

Dear Dr. Mader Math Revisited,

I think that whatever KenBot decides to do will happen. Kenbot does not need special permissions from faculty and accrediting bodies. I am sure there is some sort of mathematical model to explain how the accumulation of so many important jobs gives the bearer greater authority than any faculty or accreditation group can produce.  Well, it is apparent that I really need this numerology degree, because I can't seem to produce a proper proof.  A regular PhD (from a top ranked Univ) is just not good enough!   Sincerely, your fan, Phoenix
