Where did he go after Arkansas? Last I heard, he was in transition.

Is he still at Arkansas State? I know he was replaced as "vice chancellor for research" last spring & it looks as if ASU has undergone a reorganization. Cotten is not listed on their site, except in archives.

Thanks for the info Invictus.
All of this is news to me. Does anyone out there know where Don Cotton is now?

Actually, IIRC, the original proposal was to sell "15 minute presidencies" to raise money for the university. Dr. Polk stated that 15 minutes would be all the time he needed.
In my 26 year career in higher ed, I have seen colleges & universities operate perfectly well without presidents. I have seen divisions & schools operate perfectly well without deans. I have seen departments survive (nay, thrive) without department chairs. But I have never seen a college or university function without students & teachers.
For that reason, I would have to insist as an alumnus that as soon as his 15 minutes were over, Dr. Polk return posthaste to the classroom & get on with his more important work!
A "15 minute presidency" couldn't be any more fragmented than the current USM administration...

Oh, Mr. Wonderful...this gets my vote for the week!

I believe he is retired in the eyes of PERS. I know his wife got her "25" before she left Jones.
Since their house is at Canebrake, it's quite possible that he's playing bass for that new hip-hop boy band

Of his many transgressions, attempting to erase USM's institutional memory and destroying the infrastructure of the university may be the two greatest. A properly run university ought to have multiple candidates mentored, experienced, and qualified to move up.

It does. Highly qualified candidates. They were at Mr. Chain's house last night, honoring the Stringer's.
Then put their names forward. We've been 'round and 'round on this topic since it was first raised on FIRESHELBY. There have only been a few names that have ever come up without being flamed. One of them is Don Cotton already noted above.

For some reason I can't quite explain, I have a nagging feeling that it would not be appropriate to post the names of anyone who was there. Sorry, but that's what USM has done to me. I will say that I believe there are really only two characteristics which go into the making of a good president: (a) a high degree of integrity, and (b) the wisdom to put competent people in place and let them do their jobs. USM has quite a few who meet that criteria.
I was reflecting after I posted that it was not a good idea right now to name individuals - maybe later in the fall. I came back to retract my request and you had already posted. Your criteria is good. At some point, however, there has to be a candidate that people can rally behind. I believe one of the reasons that Shelby has stayed in office is because there was no one that the IHL board could get behind. As an example, if Aubrey Lucus had quietly assembled a team last spring would it have been strong enough to force a change in leadership? I don't know and it's moot now. Remember plans for the "Bow-tie affair"?

Thank you, Polynomous, for your reply to my posting. I felt really bad about not naming names, but I honestly believe that advancing on-campus names at this time might do more damage than good should any of them become viable candidates.
