This new thread was started to separate the HUDSON issue in another thread.
Hudson did make promises to the faculty senate that he would address the negative image cast upon the faculty via letters to the media. However, anyone that knows Hudson knows it was a lie. To hear Hudson tell it he has no control over the faculty and that those who do raise the issue are the problem children that he has no faith in so why attempt to work it out.
Hudson would be the first to tell you that if he were to become President of USM he would take on a major house cleaning to empower his cronies. As I understand it, Hudson was the major player behind make changes in the raises - taking people off the list and rplacing friends.
As someone mentioned to us on the FS board Lisa Mader has complete control over the negative media and SFT will NOT stop her it is part of his plan. The solution is to get rid of Lisa Mader she does not know what she is doing and cannot handle the pressure.

1) I assume you are talking about the Opinions letters and the few instructors yelling on TV or smashing awards on TV? Is that right?
2) How was Hudson supposed to stop the negative press?
3) I am really confused by this post. Are you talking about the faculty and their friends who wrote letters to the media complaining about Thames or are you talking about the faculty and their friends who wrote letters complaining about the anti-Thames faculty? Or are you talking about both?
4) Can you elaborate on your post about Lisa Mader. Are you saying she has control over all the letters that anti-Thames faculty and their "friends" wrote to the media?
Has anybody else noticed that since the people on this board and some of the other former faculty have stopped writing letters to HA that there have been no more negative letters about the USM faculty? In fact, the last letter I remember was Parker's and we all saw what a mess that made. Since response to his letter died down, I have not seen additional letters.

Once he earned those awards they were his own personal property to dispose in any manner he wished. You should hear what has happened to some of those silver-plated retirement-reception bowls. Many facuty have left USM. I know few (if any) who left happy.

Correction...only one professor destroyed his teaching awards (publicly, that is), and that was D.C. Berry.
2) How was Hudson supposed to stop the negative press?
By making positive, supportive statements about faculty members as most university provosts would have done.

I believe that the poster was referring to disparaging comments in the media made *about* faculty members from community members (some alum and some not).
Nice spin OP. You make the same errors that Seeker use to make.

We are talking about the opinion letters critical of faculty for "not doing a days work for a days pay", being "lazy" and "radical". These letters were from people who had no knowledge of how a university works and no knowledge of faculty evaluations to make these observations.
2) How was Hudson supposed to stop the negative press?
He agreed to REBUT these types of letters when they appeared in the media.
3) I am really confused by this post. Are you talking about the faculty and their friends who wrote letters to the media complaining about Thames or are you talking about the faculty and their friends who wrote letters complaining about the anti-Thames faculty? Or are you talking about both?
The letters complaining about the faculty needed to be rebutted because they were NOT factual. They were OPINIONS of people who had no knowledge of how a university operates. You are making the same mistake Seeker made. He assumed both sides were wrong. However, the letters critical of SFT were usually from faculty informing the public that SFT was being unprofessional because he was not using Shared Governance. The public is generally ignorant of this process. If you can't see this difference, I must assume you are a prof ONLY online.

I'm not. However, as PR person for the UNIVERSITY, she should be rebutting ALL negative publicity about staff, faculty, student and administration, not just SFT. There is some evidence (similarity of the letters critical of faculty, a mail out to alumni, etc) that letters critical of the faculty were encourage by an administrator. This is the perception of some faculty and was told to SFT at the PC meeting in June. Of course, you won't see those exact words in the minutes, but he was told. "
Let's face it. In his two years as Provost, whether before or after the carefully planned and purposeful switch from the coast to the Burg (thank you, Lisa), Hudson has not done one single thing to support the academic heart of the University--the faculty.
Rumor now has it that he is positioning himself to return as president when Thames retires. If this is true, God bless you everyone.

Of course, that's what he wants to do. Everyone should know that!

good thing he didn't rebut. that just would have prolonged the battle, which is really what most of you here want to do. as someone else noted, the problem seemed to stop once former faculty, staff, and friends stopped writing. that is all that had to be done. you want to test my hypothesis? start your negative writing campaign again.

Wow, you really are from a Communist regime, now aren't you? You want people to give up their first amendment rights to what end???

Just wait, sickle&hammer, for the fall semester to begin. There are many faculty issues that SFT has ignored, but they haven't gone away. Most of the faculty are not here during the summer. Letters and more will resume. Prepare for the new season. Things might start to get interesting at the next PC meeting on Wednesday.

Well, I committed the great intellectual sin of not actually checking my facts. My apologies if my statement was incorrect, but I am intrigued that you care enough to save my letters, darlin' -- how touching.
Has anyone determined if TH left the "package" containing the info on Dome dealings? I would think we could start looking for that info to be leaked now.
