Seems to me that regardless of his background, Halstead wanted to close the gap between the "haves" and "have-nots" of the Pine Belt.  And that didn't sit well with the Canebrake crowd.  Interesting.

We'll probably never know the "real" story behind all of this, but I'm sure it's a good one!

(PS--Yet again, you have to wonder why "university spokesperson" Lisa Mader only "speaks" for members of the SFT administration, and never on behalf of individual faculty members.  Kinda tells you about what SFT's believes constitutes the "university").

Truth4USM,

"University" spokespeople speak for the upper administration.

Lisa Mader is just more blatant about her true mission  than most of colleagues dare to be.

This is why I think the Faculty Senate should consider a resolution of no confidence in her.

I agree she is NOT doing a good job promoting the faculty, I do not believe the FS could get a "resolution" of no confidence passed.  No one from the Deans on up to SFT will ever complain enough to get her "fired".   Any other suggestions?

It was brought up at President's Council by one of the Faculty Senate members that the perception of the faculty was that the PR department was not being used properly. The PR department never rebutted negative letters about faculty in the media. It was pointed out by another PC member that Provost Hudson had promised FS to rebut each negative letter, but that never happened.

SFT's response was to distribute a bulky list of positive PR made last year, but it didn't address rebutting letters. There are plans to make this problem public again.

This is how he handles all matters that he has basically caused.  He just ignores them. He doesn't have the know how to even be able to use bait and switch tactics.

Otherside, good luck to you and others as you try to press this issue!

Those who know the internal dynamics: is the current Faculty Senate at USM prepared for a long hard struggle against the Shelby Thames regime?  Or were the deal that was cut concerning Angie Dvorak's "business resume," and the decision to send a represenative to the PUC/PC, indications that the Senate leadership now prefers to "work with" Thames and crew?

Given Mader's track record, why would any Faculty Senator not support a resolution of no confidence in her?

I will never believe that the FS is willing to fold on the issues that remain critical to the academic well being of USM.

While Halstead's resignation is not directly costly to USM, it has been noted that his new house in the range of 300K in Timberton was put on the market yesterday. The HA noted that the terms of the settlement were not announced. The Hattiesburg area is paying dearly in settlements to GS, FG, and now PH for Shelboo's mistakes.

Thanks.

Robert, you ask tough questions.
1. If staff council and the student government supplied elected reps to PC, but only FS refused, I think that would supply SFT and his public support ammunition against FS. Don't forget the reason FS and others were critical of PC was there were no elected reps. SFT agreed to expand to elected reps, but NOT any reps who were already on these councils. So the current make up was "forced" on him by the PC members. Some feel obligated to reward this fight and victory of the PC. You can look forward to tougher questions being brought up in public at the PC. Some rumor that if they get too tough(with the press present) SFT may decide the PC may not be needed for very long.

2. Concerning Mader, it is difficult to consider a vote of no confidence in a STAFF person who is doing what the boss tells her to do. I think her choices are do what told or resign. However, I will continue thinking about this issue and discuss it with others.

I am not condeming the Faculty Senate and the decisions that they make. However, I am pointing out what I consider to be a truth - Faculty Senate members are appointed by chairs of departments that are governed by deans who answer to the president (I'd include provosts here but, considering the infrastructure of the current USM, that would truly be ludicrous). We still have strong Faculty Senate members intact who continue to be ignored by the Dome Gnome and his cohorts. Obviously, the FS has to work with this little person in order to keep the USM wheels turning. But, unless you exist within a strong departmental structure of people who continue to act upon ethical beliefs, you may find it easier to nod your head and say Bygones rather than risk further fury if you go against the grain of the current administration.  I have some insight into the Halstead situation, and I believe that he is leaving because he decided that he couldn't do the Devil's deeds.

Whoah!  Are you saying that USM Faculty senators are *appointed* rather than *elected????*  Please tell me this is simply a typo!

Of course, at USM these days, anything is possible, unfortunately.

Faculty Senate members are elected as reps from each college.

Truth, in some Colleges, honest elections might still exist. In others, the script from the get-go is clear and the names put up for election have been selected. I am not berating any individuals either. We've seen jobs taken away from people at a moment's notice at USM if the prez isn't happy with them. I don't blame anybody for laying low and trying to fly under the Shelboo radar.

Given this, it makes the unanimous no-confidence vote by the Faculty Senate earlier this year seem even more miraculous.  Too bad Shelboo seems to have overcome (for now) that death-knell...most presidents wouldn't have survived this long after a university-wide no-confidence vote.

In a world that we'd like to inhabit, all Colleges would operate within the same system of representative government. It is not happening at USM, and I am not attacking every College either. Some Colleges still do the right thing - if that was not the case, then SFT would not have found the need to create another governing body (PUC). If SFT respected journalistic efforts, we'd have no Varsity Voice either.

I completely agree. That unanimous no-confidence vote meant something, but it's disheartening when the IHL ignores it.  That no confidence vote caught Shelby unaware. His advisors are trying to clean all of that mess up. I am not saying that the FS is corrupt by any means - they have been very brave souls in the face of the fire. I just worry that some outside forces are leaning in on some of the FS members. All I know is that all that glitters is not gold.

Omen, you need to explain where you get this idea.
Faculty Senate elections are not conducted by members of a collage, but rather by the FS Elections Committee. Names are not "put up". There are NO nominations. Instead the ballot for each college has the names of all eligible faculty from that college. By this method, it is every seldom that someone gets elected on the first round. (This year was the first time that I remember it happening and that person was Myron Henry, past president of FS.) I don't see how anyone in a college could fix and election conducted in this way.

Are you confusing FS with the make-up of President's Council?

I didn't say all Colleges, I inferred that there might be one or more who promote such practices. They would be the Colleges that don't have many vocal members participating on this Message Board. I am not confusing anything. I am telling you what I've been told and what I have previously witnessed. It's not ALL of them by any stretch of the imagination.

OS and LA, I'm interested in this topic because I work for the Faculty Senate at Vanderbilt, and I know how elections are conducted here.  Here, each college/school does have their own system for electing senators, and the FS has no say in it.  Therefore, different colleges/schools have different ways to deal with elections (mostly depending on the size of the college/school...some put all eligible faculty members on the ballots, some are more "directed" in their choice of nominees).  There is no one right way, but there is at least an *election* in every school/college.  Some universities also have "at-large" senators that can come from any division.  Does USM have that?

Anyway, of course deans and other folks might have a hand in getting people elected who will work for them (in any system).  The problem at USM, currently, seems to be that there is zero confidence (as evidenced by the no confidence vote!) in the administration, and by association, the deans.  So, every move is criticized because of this.  It's amazing that the Faculty Senate is getting anything done at this point (and I commend David Beckett and others for getting the $400 raise across the board...that's quite an accomplishment).

Omen, previously you said, "...However, I am pointing out what I consider to be a truth - Faculty Senate members are appointed by chairs of departments that are governed by deans who answer to the president..." Then you said, "...Truth, in some Colleges, honest elections might still exist. In others, the script from the get-go is clear and the names put up for election have been selected."

I rebutted this by saying, "Faculty Senate elections are not conducted by members of a collage, but rather by the FS Elections Committee. Names are not "put up". There are NO nominations. Instead the ballot for each college has the names of all eligible faculty from that college."

Your response above, "I didn't say all Colleges, I inferred that there might be one or more who promote such practices." doesn't even address the contradictions I see between our statements.

However, you used the words "inferred" and "might" above that I missed. To me this says you might be making this up as you go or the person who told you the story is a good storyteller.

Sorry I didn't mean to flame you. I just want to separate what is fact, from rumor and story telling.

Thanks for your response. What I say doesn't apply to all colleges. What I say is far more than I should be saying. It's hard to be a FS member in a college that believes in towing the line. I'm not telling stories either. I actually hate the position that a few FS members have been put in by agreeing to serve on the Senate. I'm not trying to be inflamatory either.  Please try to read between my lines. I can't point fingers nor name names - it would not be in a few people's best interests. I am speaking for a few who can not.

No need for particulars Omen. Just resolve this statement you made with my questions below so I know you are not a troll.

One of the things you said is, "However, I am pointing out what I consider to be a truth - Faculty Senate members are appointed by chairs of departments that are governed by deans who answer to the president...".

1. How can the FS member be appointed by a chair if the ballots go to all of the faculty in the college?
2.How does the chair get these ballots marked without the faculty of the college knowing they didn't get a ballot?
3. What evidence do you have that makes you consider it "to be a truth"?

I hope you don't hear voices. And I am tell the truth, because I hold it in the highest regard.

LA--OS is not a troll.  But OS is speaking for FS members who cannot speak for themselves.  I believe you are talking about two different processes.  You are talking about the election process and OS is talking about the pressures of being a senator.  Forgive me, OS, if I'm speaking for you, but that's how I see it.

I was very unclear with the quote that you pointed out to me. I guess I am hedging because to say too much is to reveal too much. I am not a troll, and I admire the FS. You are right ,the chairs don't outright appoint FS members, but they do influence who is voted into that position, if they so choose to. Many chairs are fair, a couple arent'.  I am not attacking the FS. I actually feel sorry for some of them since they are in no win positions. They are very brave people, but one College does not equate to the next College at this university.

Thanks for the explanation Truth.

At USM the FS Elections Committee conducts the elections. The ballots for each college have the eligible faculty. (I believe depts. that already have a rep are not on the ballot and no dept can have 2 reps until all depts. are represented.) However all faculty in the college get to vote. For example a college may have 10 depts., but only 3 senators seats up for election, but all faculty vote. The ballots are sent via campus mail addressed to each faculty member from the chair of the elections committee. Ballots are mailed back to that EC chair.

I hope you can see how different this is from what Omen was describing, and why I was responding.
