The lion's share of "personnel turnover" postings on this board has pertained to faculty departures. Far less attention has been paid to the staggering incidences of administrative departures. I see the current situation as represented by an inverted ice cream cone. The top (larger) portion of the cone represents faculty. The bottom (smaller tip) of the cone represents upper-leveladministration. It is a hot, sunny day. The university president is the ice creamafficionado. He loves ice cream, but can't keep it in the cone. The cone has become soft and mushy, and it is emiting seepage through the bottom tip. It is oozing. The leakage through the tip is occuring more rapidly than can be properly repaired by the ice cream aficionado. His patchwork to correct the sticky situation is ineffective, and he can only sit back and watch helplessly as the melted ice cream hits the sidewalk. Hattiesburg Provosts: There goes Tim Hudson - one year. And Jay Grimes - one year. VP for Financial Affairs: Linda McFall - one year. VP for Student Affairs Joe Paul almost dripped, but the afficionado somehow managed to slurp him back into the cone - at least for now. VP for Admissions and Recruitment, Wesley - one year. M. Dvorak, Director of Human Resources - one year. Director of Human Resources Russ Willis was slurped back up - at least for the moment. Risk Manager Hanbury - one year. Comptroler Sam Thomas - one and one-half years. Budget Director Keith - two years. Associate Provost Siltanen - one and one-half years. Assistant Provost Ryan - one year. Little or no continuity or direction. Perhaps the wrong people for the right job, or the right people for the wrong job. Perhaps an invalid selection tool is being used. Perhaps there is another reason for such a hugh turnover in the upper-level administration. What is the reason for such a turnover? Can other short-term USM administrators be added to the list?
Let's not forget VP of Research and Economic Development Dvorak, 11 deans, and how many assistant/associate deans and department chairs? With a new provost, will it be five in as many years?
This will certainly have an effect on SACS accreditation.
Don't know about Brad's status. But I hear Hudson sold Brad out and has blamed alot of the Provost mis-management on Brad. I even hear Hudson has blamed Brad for some of his dirty work so he could save face with SFT.

I think BB was one of the people caught between the proverbial rock and hard place. I hope he gets the chance to redeem himself now that he's out from under the slime. Unfortunately, it ain't gonna be Shelby who gives him a chance. Under normal circumstances (assuming that decisions were rational, that there were not already a second provost nor promises made), wouldn't someone in Brad's position move up to interim?

Evidently everything he touches does not turn to gold. Quite the opposite seems to be true. No provost. Rookie deans. Other wholesale administrative turnovers. Internal position shuffling. Two years of crisis management. No management team in place. And all of this within a two year period. Knock Knock. Wake up IHL. IHL where are you? HELLO!!!

If this is true, it is most unfortunate. Bond is hard working and as sharp as they come. One could not ask for a better colleague. What "Dirty Work" could Hudson blame on Bond?
Perhaps the most telling circumstance about Shelby's lack of administrative ability is that he's not even considering Jay Grimes, his original (and cross-trained) Hattiesburg Provost. On the contrary, he's paying JG to play the mostly ceremonial part of the Gulf Coast Provost.
