Statement From Online Prof About His Activity
Permalink Closed

Let me just start by saying that threatening me and lying about me is only going to make me more determined. The only name I have ever used on this board is “OnlineProf.” I do not know the other people you are talking about. I am not trying to break up your community; I am just trying to create one for the real faculty and AAUP members. I know real faculty and AAUP members will not do or say some of the things that you folks are doing. If I were webmaster I would not be anonymous. I just offered to be webmaster to ease the transition of going to a members-only board. The currently faculty are dependent on nonmembers because the current faculty and members do not have the time to run a website and bulletin board and because most of them do not know how. This is why I volunteered my services.

I want to thank you for confirming for me which of you are not faculty and that I am apparently the only AAUP member on this board. All I did was follow through with a plan to go members-only, and other than the top few AAUP organizers at the USM chapter, I would think many of the faculty would appreciate this. I also know that if the USM chapter does go with an official website and board that the membership list will have to go through several AAUP members for approval before being issued a password. This will keep a few current AAUP people from issuing passwords to nonmembers.

I am not going to discuss this matter here anymore because I should not be discussing it with nonfaculty and non-AAUP members. For those of you who liked some of my ideas or plans, you can email me to discuss them further. But know this. If your email does not come from a  “@usm.edu” address, my email client automatically deletes the email before it even comes to my Inbox. All email not ending in usm.edu gets deleted unread.

My email address is onlineprof@myway.com.

Uh, you're wrong.  Many other AAUP members (including Frank Glamser and Anne Wallace) have posted on this board.  You need to take your axe to grind some place else.

Online Prof,

If you only accept email that comes from an edu.usm address, I doubt you will get many knocking on your door - for two obvious reasons: (1) Why should a faculty member write you in a manner where you can know their identity, but they can't know yours? (2) I haven't used the usm.edu address since the computer incidents became public. I suspect others also ceased using usm.edu. The more I read of your postings, the more I am inclined to believe you have no earthly idea how bad things are at USM.

To that I would add: And the more I am inclined to believe you might be "working for the man." You are no confidence builder, Online Prof.

Online Prof,

Is the mission on which you have been sent that of confirming "which of you are not faculty" and confirming that you are "the only AAUP member on this board"? Well, well, well.

Online Prof,

I keep reading your post over and over, and the more I read the higher my suspicion index becomes. Right now it is off the top of the chart. Do you not know that USM has a recent history of reading the emails of faculty members? Do you not know that the administration attempted to fire two tenured faculty members following some sort of email incident? Given that, you are asking faculty members to email you for the purpose you describe? USM faculty members are not stupid. Somehow the term "entrapment" comes to mind. But I am sure I am wrong about that.

So you want faculty members to use their USM address with their name on it to contact you at your non USM address with your pseudonym on it, right? Would you like us to include a few of our credit card numbers as well just to show our good faith?

Finally, we are all on the same page.  Online Prof is a plant.  If you read his post, his statements about not hiding behind anonymity, etc.  He says if made board manager he would not be hiding, we would all know that "Online Prof" is the board's monitor, and that Online Prof is an AAUP member.  Did his parents name him "Online Prof?"  I bet he got teased alot in school, and often asked what the "online" part of his name meant (or where it came from).  His parents seem to have been prophetic.  Amy Young, can you confirm to us that someone by the name of "Online Prof" is a member of the AAUP?  If not, will you report that fact here for us so we'll all know he's lying about his AAUP membership.  Thanks Amy.

Online prof has me upset. AS a rulE I don't read the "bored games" and "joke" threads because I only have time for the serious stuff. After following the threads involving Online Prof I now discover O.P. IS A JOKE.

"Online Prof,"

If you are for real, all you need to do is make sure that your proposal to restrict this message board to members of the USM chapter of AAUP is on the agenda for the next meeting of the AAUP chapter.  It will then be up to you to convince enough of your fellow AAUP chapter members to vote in favor of your proposal.

But you haven't gone that route.  You announced right off the bat that you had written to Jane Buck, asking for a ruling against the use of this message board by persons who are not members of the USM chapter of AAUP.  That was a move with an extremely low probability of paying off, for reasons I have already tried to explain.  More to the point here, it speaks volumes for your level of trust in the membership of the USM AAUP chapter.  You talk as though just a few malcontents on the Executive Committee would be in favor of keeping this message board open to non-members.  In fact, you are acting as though a substantial majority of the chapter membership is opposed to your scheme, and you have no chance of getting their approval for it.

I have yet to see any statement from you concerning the propriety of using this board to criticize Shelby Thames and other top administrators at USM.   Since you haven't said that it is OK for any participant here to criticize the USM administration, I'm inclined to infer that you want to make sure that no one does.

Robert Campbell

PS.  The national office of the AAUP has occasionally received complaints from administrators who were pretending to be faculty members.

(cross-posted)

If Online Prof is for real, he is going about making friends here in all of the wrong ways.  The most suspicious thing about "him" is that he has just started posting, and already wants to take over this board.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but unless Amy Young and the AAUP executive board decide that this message board should be restricted, it will remain free and open.  Online Prof is here to stir up trouble, and I, for one, will be ignoring any subsequent posts from him.  I urge others to do the same.

Respectfully submitted,

Truth (aka Andrea Hewitt, longtime Fire Shelby community member, former USM staffer, and current USM PhD candidate who can be reached at a non-USM email account  truth@FireThames.com and who accepts email from all domains!)

OnLine Prof:

I'm having a hard time understanding why you are so insistant on having a closed Board if you are an AAUP member. It is probably worth a discussion if you are sincere but this is the third AAUP chapter with which I have been associated and none of those chapters have ever been associated with this form of exclusion as an organization accept in very specific instances (discussion of personnel issues or the need to create a specific moment of discussion (in time) to allow faculty members who felt vulnerable to express themselves on fairly specific or time sensitive issues.

I'm not opposed to having a members only Board parallel to this one. I am a bit uncomfortable with some sense from your previous addresses that this is not just a matter of creating a forum for "protecting" the vulnerable or allowing AAUP members to be able to have conversations that might be able to be somewhat less rambling and perhaps more programmitcally directed but also feels as though there is a kind of elitist impulse beneath that. I'm also feeling that you would rather the new Board replace rather than parallel this one. That may very well be unfair -- but to some extent it is hard not to pick up that implication, from my point of view. I'm sorry in advance if that is not the case.

If you are an AAUP member then I know you at least somewhat so you certainly know where my university email address is if I'm being unfair.

OnProf = Varsity Voice = PUC

If you don't like what you're hearing - change the organization and its rules by creating one that accommodates your particular agenda.

Random Thought:  Ever notice how the main instigators on this board (Online Prof, Little Seeker, Shelby's Right, etc.) tend to use a larger font than the rest of us?  Imply what you want, but I imagine it has something to do with the fact that these people are larger than life and have really important points that need to be made.  Or, they could be visually-impaired and require larger fonts for easier reading without their bifocals (like my Grandmother).

Thanks for bearing with me on this one....

NO QUARTER

I must admit the larger fonts do make one feel mighty and important.  Carry on.....

My post was in large letters, Rock, but I was just testing out the available fonts and sizes. I'm on your side of the issues. It's true that I'm "larger than life," but I promise to cut out the burgers and fries. At least I won't "biggie size" my order again.
