1. gorod sought the sage words of an acquaintance who has served on the faculty and administration of an "099" university. Here's some of an e-mail gorod recently forwarded to the mill from the sage..
"One of the things you are going to notice in the 'transition' to open admissions is a shift in the student body's selection of desired major. Some colleges will gain, while others will fall off some ...... at the same time, shifts in desires within colleges will occur. These changes aren't terribly drastic (usually), but can give less-than-astute admininstrators at the departmental and college level fits at times . . . Given my administrative experience in such a transition, I would certainly be willing to make funds available for faculty development (in terms of teaching/instruction) during the transition, and I would also be willing to assist with instructional grants where possible. Assuming your president cares about the quality of instruction, I would think this would be done......It will be absolutely essential that good executive staff exists at the departmental level (and sometimes the college level). Open admissions students will need their services more often that you currently see there, so make sure you keep good staff happy if you can. . . As far as campus life is concerned, expect more of a 'suitcase' situation. I don't know your current situation intimately, but if you already have that mentality there, it will become more prominent. . .Greek life on your campus will be more difficult to maintain (in terms of any appreciable presence). If your admininstration has had problems with Greeks in the past, and is looking for a chance to minimize that sector, this type of transition will certainly help its cause in that area. Of course, with 'suitcase' situations comes lower student attendance at athletics events and other on-campus events, especially on weekends. So, expect that trend to grow further.. . . If the open admissions process truly takes over the institution, you might see the administration create a new (non degree-granting) college within the university structure, complete with a Dean, Assistant Dean, etc., to handle all of the remedial-type coursework the students will need to get prepared for their chosen major later on.. . . . . . . . .As an interesting sidebar, after you've made the transition, don't expect to maintain anywhere near the level of private support (endowments, large/medium-sized gifts, etc.) that you have been used to. You aren't going to be graduating the type of student that will give (later on) at rates or amounts you might be accustomed, and your current donors aren't going to speak highly of the transition with their own dollars....."
Thanks gorod. The e-mail has a few other tidbits that may be shared with readers of future mills.
2. Today's HA contains a snipet (just inside front page) on USM's contracts. Lisa Mader indicates that contracts should be ready for distribution to USM faculty late next week. The hold up has been the merit raise process, at least according to Mader.
3. Still awaiting reports from operatives on the fallout from today's PUC meeting. Of course, the mill would welcome being "scooped" by discussion on the board tonight.
The Guru rocks!!! I know it's been discussed before, but much of what he/she says is on the mark. My sense is that the Guru's accuracy rate is at least as high as the batting average of all-stars in MLB, which is about as much as you can ask for.
It seems the Guru, with such a high level of "activity" today, has touched some raw nerves judging by some recent posts on the rumor mill threads. Moniker's of USM administrators are so easy to detect --- they share a common trait. Me thinks one has been stung a little bit today by the Guru.

Not much news from the PUC tonight Guru. SFT had to cut the meeting short to go to the coast. It was all over by 4 p.m. I posted what I thought would be of interest.

Did I miss the announcement about changes i n our admissions' policy? Thanks.
can you give examples other than athletic scholarships? i know any number of local students who received scholarships and they didn't have the sort of gpa's you mention.

scm,
Just got off the phone with a friend who teaches at an area high school (outside hattiesburg) and told me that students with 2.7 GPA's (or higher) were "invited" to apply for USM scholarships (NOT ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIPS), these were general scholarships...........

I'm not stunned since this place is another universe.

How true scm, maybe the guru and his agents can gather additional info on admissions numbers and scholarship receipents. In addition, my friend (who teaches at the h.s.)informed me that a letter announcing the scholarship(s) was sent by USM and they will try to see if they can find a copy. I'll pass on any additional info I come across.
MTAG--Mississippi Tuitition Assistance Grant--funded by the state and administered by the IHL requires a 2.5 GPA and a minimum of 15 on the ACT. This program has been around since 1995.

But this is a grant, not a scholarship. It's not merit-based (just has a minimum qualifying GPA/ACT).
i tend to disagree--there are minimum requirements and you have to maintain a gpa in college to continue receiving it. not much different than the MESG (Mississippi Eminent Scholar Grant). mom, pop, kids, and hs counselors see them as scholarships.

Sorry, SCM, but technically, a scholarship is merit-based. A grant is given to anyone who meets the minimum requirements. So, not everyone who meets the minimum requirements for a Presidential Scholarship will get one. But everyone who meets the minimum requirements of the MTAG or MESG will. See the difference? You have to maintain a GPA to continue receiving a Pell Grant, too, yet no one calls these "scholarships." The MTAG is simply the state version of the federal Pell Grant.
i suspect you're right. but when i read people saying that USM offered "scholarships" and they hear it from someone in the community, i don't know that people in the community (or hs counselors) make such a distinction. so when i read these posts about "scholarships" being given to people with low gpas, i read them with a large grain of salt.

I'll grant you that--perception is key. It'll be interesting to see if this is the case in the situation above.
MTAG's are given to all Miss students in higher ed (even CCs). This is not a USM thing. Don't knock this program. It helps many people that do not qualify for federal assistance.
Also, there a many scholarships out there that are not necessarily tied to gpa. How about if the person has a low gpa but scored a 34 on the ACT (don't say it doesn't happen, we all know the reverse...high ACT but flunks out...happens all the time). How about a leadership scholarship, alumni, grandfather won a purple heart (yes that one exists and I did apply to it many years ago), member of under represented minority. Do you think all of the students with band scholarships had 4.0s in HS? What if you won a scholarship at a HS competition, a game show, a beauty pageant. My point is, there are many scholarships out there and they do not necessarily go to people with high HS gpa's.
