New Handbook Committee
Permalink Closed

From Faculty Senate Listserv:

From FS President:

Faculty Handbook committee :
Dave Beckett, Cecil Burge, Russell Willis, Renee Falconer, Lee Gore, Cynthia Moore, and Joan Exline.

Dr. Exline is included because she will be attending the first meeting to help establish the committee; I am fairly certain that she will NOT be a member of the committee. I assume the rest of the people ARE on the committee. However, I will not know that until we meet. There may be some changes made. I will let everyone know who is on the committee once it is established. ...

Dave Beckett
(At present, messages concerning the Faculty Handbook committee go to me.)

Insider, you do know how to call them. People say that RF is a good person. She's just way too tied in with the CRK, RK, and DT. MMS - have a good laugh. Looks like some resumes are being pumped.

Having Exline on the committee is like having Shelby there. Mark my words, she won't drop off the committee and she'll insist that things are done her way or else.

RF is a DT mouthpiece with a British accent. She's in too deep with the muck to be able to competently make sound decisions.  She is a great human being though with the potential of doing far better. Her husband's employment with Stennis makes her immobile at the present time. Guess she's learned to look the other way. Thanks, Insider.

I think you will find the saving grace is that Dave Beckett is smart, moderate AND he will refer the handbook back to the Senate during the process. That the Handbook ended up as reasonable a document as it did had much to do with Senate watchfulness. I'd also say there is no one on this committee as devious and malevolent as Hanbury -- it was Hanbury who WROTE the original document and who frequently resisted without much in the way of explanation that was a huge problem in the last round. Hanbury was an outsider, had no loyalty to USM as a community, and was a bull-necked intimidator by nature. He could sit in a committee meeting and simply refuse to budge without ncessarily feeling compelled to justify his position -- I think most of the current crop are not in this kind of position.

Does the current administration view the Faculty Handbook as a contractual agreement between faculty and admin.???  Where is the set of rules that make for equitable rules of engagement? Glad to know that DB is a good guy. RF is a great person too, but she knows what side of the bread is getting buttered right now, and it's a shame to see her sell out. I don't know her personally, but from my vantage point -- every tidbit of info coming out of the president's daughter's dept. becomes more depressing every day. It's a warning about the levels that they will stoop to.

Stephen, good to see you back.  Dave Beckett is the right person at the right time to lead the FS.  Not that the FS prior leaders did not do a good job, it's just that due to yearly elections we had to have a new ex committee.  An interesting story about DB is when we had the "bats" under the stadium and in the girls dorm, DB told everyone what needed to be done, but nobody listened and USM spend thousands of $ bringing in "experts".....funny thing was if they had done what DB told them in the first place, they would have removed the bats sooner and less $ would have been spent.

I just love reading my name here! Good folks in the 'Burg call/e-mail and tell me to read, but I am usually too busy to bother!

I'd hold my 3rd year review dossier (oh, by the way, Shellboo won't give it back; mistakenly thinks it's USM's intellectual property) to anyone on this committe or anyone who attained a positive 3rd year review from 2000 to present who hails from CISE. Now, I resigned and I cannot get my 3rd year review dossier returned? make sense? Creeping paranoia? The statue of limitations has a bit to go before expiring................................................

Integrity (Mitch) is not a 90% or 95% deal, either you have it or (in your case) you don't!!! And I am not your friend from NOLA. She was a doc student from CISE when it was still C&I...................the horror stories she tells. I never was nor never will be your friend. Friends and colleagues of mine possess integrity!

And, an earlier post-er was correct, I did not receive a contract for 2002-2003...and while I may look stupid, I decided not to take a chance on working at an institution with corrupt morals, inept practices and business acumen that makes Yemen look good.

How sad that the power hungry DGT and SFT dy-nasty ruined a pretty good university.

Does Dave Beckett happen to know how to remove the from the Dome???

a stupid question to MMS--did you not keep a copy of your 3rd year dossier?  when you say you can't get your dossier back, do you mean all of the personnel committee letters, chair's letter, etc.?  or just what you submitted to the t/p committee?

MMS isn't "psychotic" by any strain of the brain. Folks, beware how evil this whole system can be. She wants the originals back, and we were told in this department to turn in the originals. MMS has an absolute right to  be angry - she wants the originals. She was basically hoodwinked through her credentials. She is understandably irritated. Those not knowledgable about the CEP and how CISE works within that realm - I can only point out that closer interest needs to be paid to this area. I for one had documents in my dossier "disappear" once they felt that their devious ways were about to catch up with them.

MMS's post reveals how nasty everything in the CEP has become. Many of us can't wait until Melissa Whiting's testimony reveals truths that the general public are not ready to accept. She will tell all, she's not afraid of the Thames family at all, and she wants to blow the lid off of all this mess.

As a former student from the CISE Dept., I can verify that it is in shambles.  Confusion reigns.  No one dares defy the DT.

Was C&I changed to CISE so people would quit referring to DT as the "C&I dog"?

Keep the important USM-related things. That could be very important. I even rented a safe deposit box in which to maintain some of my USM-related documents. Well worth the $55/year just for the peace of mind. This place makes one overly vigilant. And one more thing: Look over your shoulder frequently.

I am truly saddened by your recent posts, MMS. I don't know why you are so angry with me, given that I was not involved with CISE at all when you were here. I did enjoy our conversations, and never thought ill of you. If I have done something to offend or hurt you, forgiveness is all I can ask.

Lots of bad feelings that were not caused by you. MMS walked into the CISE Dept. in late July 2002 to see the contracts sitting in her colleagues boxes. Her box was empty even though the UAC overturned DT's and CM's 3rd year review evaluation. Jay Grimes (the H'burg provost at that point) sided with SFT. Nepotism, perhaps?   She is angry because she produced!! She is a great teacher, researcher, scholar, is huge into Community Service Learning - all in all she knew her stuff (and continues to do so). When she walked into the room where the mail is placed and saw that, in spite of a favorable UAC appeal, she was not given a contract -- she had to start thinking on her toes (so to speak). USM lost one hell of an EDUCATOR in MMS. Her students will back me up on this.  If she has chosen you as a target, Mitch, just remember that she was also one of the people burned by the system, and she is bitter about it. You basically represent a College that has caused her a lot of pain. I really don't believe that she means to be so personal.

Mitch, Educator has cautioned me to look at facts and wisely address the facts. You and I know the facts. I was left without a job, yet still having to make house payments (on Corrine St.), trying to find an answer to the professional (and breadwinning) diss that Dana Gay Thames gave me. I had some different ideas about things in that dept. (Jesse Palmer and I always voted the same), and I was excited about being in Hattiesburg MS. There was a point where you and I had a discussion that led my Chair to tell all the willing a## kissers that I was not a good colleague. This led to lots of disruption. Those of us who have fled CISE still have a good laugh about the current antics that exist. Most of us have gone onto far better jobs. The bitterness exists because we all believed that we were helping make USM a better university, that teacher education would be a better field because of our undying efforts.  Some of us obviously don't care about the $$$ cause all we needed to do in order to get a raise was to praise DT's a$$.  That would have taken little effort. Don't ask for permission, just ask for forgiveness.

My computer is giving me some trouble.

MMS-

I think I see. The IRB disagreement between you and the college rep? I recall that I stepped in as IRB chair to help resolve the issue when it was getting out of hand, and that I consulted with your chair to get everyone on the same page to get your protocol approved (the conversation at that point essentially stopped between the IRB rep and you, and things were getting quite heated).

From your last post, you reminded me of the review letter you showed me in which this instance was cited as an example of non-collegiality, and I recall being offput that this particular episode was mentioned in there. When I was chair of the IRB, it was not unusual for me to have to mediate heated disputes between researchers and IRB board members, and to have to consult with chairs or outside experts to resolve issues. I have never seen these struggles cited as an example of non-collegiality, though.

I was disappointed and surprised to see you go. You were doing interesting work and you were fun to be around.

It appears to me that CEP is a far less nasty place than it was some years ago when nasty was spelled in all caps. Too bad the powers that be didn't have the foresight to keep Dean Carl Martray who was the best thing that happened to that college since Dean Bobby Anderson. Like Anderson, Fleming was a prince of a person and a fine administrator.

I miss April Miller. She was the best.
