"State Commissioner of Higher Education Tom Meredith didn't request Friday's meeting with the University of Southern Mississippi Faculty Senate be held in private. But the commissioner didn't turn down the Faculty Senate executive committee's offer of privacy when it was extended either.
The meeting is being held to discuss the process involved in the selection of a new president to succeed Shelby Thames, who leaves the post in 2007.
...
"In order to get this meeting, we indicated to Dr. Meredith that it would be a private meeting with the senators only. The reason for this was because we wanted the commissioner to be able to be as candid as possible. I believe that only faculty will be allowed to join the meeting and that these requests should be made in advance to (Faculty Senate President) Myron Henry.
"Please understand that this is not an attempt to promote secrecy - it is an attempt to have a frank discussion between the commissioner and representatives of the faculty. We are aware that there is some possibility that there may be those in the public who might have an agenda to embarrass the commissioner and that would not be helpful to our desire to work with the commissioner to get the best search possible."
They're just mad because they're shut out. There is no reason the faculty can't meet privately with the commish. To do otherwise would make the meeting useless. How could faculty talk openly with Mr. Grimes or Ms. Exline or Ms. Moore sitting there taking names. . . er, notes?

The meeting will be private, but not secret. Besides, the last time I was in that room I noticed at least two video camera's permanently mounted to the ceiling. I looked but didn't see any microphones. It wouldn't be hard for SFT to have ITEC "bug" that room.

Don't give SFT any new ideas -- the paranoia is already bad enough.
