"I could find no evidence of an attempt by the administration to inflate enrollment at the university."

As an IHL staffer, Dr. Pepper knows which side of the toast has the butter on it.

What about Susan S. being demoted for her "human error?"

I think what happened to the person with the same initials as myself was terrible. S.S. became the scapgoat for yet another foul-up by an administration trying to be the "best" at something. Oh, they're the best in many ways, but they're not flattering ways.

I always thought it odd that the enrollment figures used to be reported to IHL before the add-drop period. At least that is what I was told. I do know that I was encouraged to get those numbers up before the add-drop period.

Doesn't USM report 10th day enrollment?  When I was in Institutional Research at Memphis some years ago, 10th day was "sacred" -- funding hinged on that number.  But the only pressure I remember there was the pressure to be scrupulously accurate.

10th day is more like bragging rights.  IHL bases funding on end-of-term enrollment (those you have in class after students have dropped or withdrawn) and it's FTE enrollment not headcount.

More years ago than I care to admit (back when my PERS contribution was an irritant rather than an investment), I was teaching at a junior college. In those days, virtually the entire state appropriation was split based on full-time enrollment at the end of the 6th week of classes. The president stood before the faculty & encouraged us not to give a major exam until the 7th week.

That may very well be the way things are currently done. But I do believe there was once a time when the "count" going to IHL was conducted much earlier - even before the add/drop period and well before the end of the semester. My guess is that somebody at IHL "got wise" to what was happening with regard to campus student count, and changed things to a more sensible method.
