"At least two elected officials and the president of the University of Southern Mississippi are among hundreds of Forrest County residents listed by the county with overdue property tax bills.
The names on the list include Forrest County Supervisor Roderick Woullard, Southern Miss President Shelby Thames and Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree."
The article goes on to say that these big names were each contacted by the paper for their explanations. It sounds like bookkeeping errors on the part of the city.
Even if the non-payment were intentional, this would be a non-story. The City and County are absolutely secured, since they receive a pre-established interest rate on unpaid taxes (and, of course, in the event can sell the property). Large land owners especially often "kite" money from one priority to another, and paying the modest penalty on taxes might look like a deal in some cash flow situations. It's a little like electing not to pay the entire balance on your Visa card.
This entire business of posting the names in the paper is just another vestige of an antediluvian tax system which not so long ago included not notifying the taxpayers of their tax obligation by mail--you had to appear in person every year. The posting requirement should be scrapped--it just costs the tax collector (i.e. you and me) money, and achieves little but embarrassment and confusion.
Does it look bad--probably. But I vote that it doesn't merit the attention of this board.
