The Chronicle of Higher Education Almanac Issue for 2006-2007 just came out today. Among the data is a table of "College and University Endowments Over $175-Million, 2005"
University of Mississippi and Foundation $397,877,000
Mississippi State University and Foundation $211,485,000
University of Memphis $175,755,000
Nothing for USM, so I guess we're not wurl-class in fund-raising.

No disagreement here, but if the announced completion of the $100 million Capital Campaign was true, you might have believed that USM would appear on the list.
Frankly, I've always been puzzled by Memphis' ranking. I went there, worked there, taught there (as an adjunct). It's been a while, but it wasn't a bad school. Of course it's a huge commuter school, but they have some outstanding programs, including the Egyptology program which recently made a truly world-class discovery in the Valley of the Kings.

Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp. Or, what's a heaven for?
It wasn't that long ago (a decade, maybe?) that the University of Memphis was Memphis State. With the name change came a different focus and a commitment to becoming a better institution. The endowment likely will be helpful in moving it along an upwards trajectory.
