"There's a new warden at the Harrison County Jail. Don Cabana, the former warden at Parchman Pentituary will run the Harrison County Jail. The leadership change was made this morning by Sheriff George Payne."

Does he want to be a professor or prison warden?!?!?!!

Will he come back to campus next year and receive another raise???

The old criminal justice program really took a hit from reorganization. At least five people are gone from that crew, and the program has lots of in house degrees. That seems to be a trend in faculty hiring these days.

I think it's six. CJ is right up there with English, nursing, math, history, and education when it comes to destruction.

When a department chair jumps ship a week before fall classes you get some idea of how unpleasant it is to work with the current administration. Any port in a storm.

The last nail in the coffin for Don may have been the large raise given to a member of his coast faculty by PJ, ostensibly without Don's knowledge or approval. Running Parchman must have been a walk in park compared to chair of CJ.

I can't buy this explanation, since Don Cabana was Faculty Senate President before he left Criminal Justice to go back to Parchman.  I was frankly amazed when he returned to USM after a year, and this latest move is even more unbelievable.  Is the current Harrison County Sheriff related to Tom Payne of USM Gulf Park?

$20M data-sharing project to aid coast law enforcement

LONG BEACH — What grew out of a brainstorming session that included brothers Harrison County Sheriff George Payne and Tom Payne, a criminal justice professor at the University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, has now become a $20 million law enforcement project for Mississippi's three coastal counties. ...

Former Parchman Warden Takes Over Harrison County Jail

There's a new warden at the Harrison County Jail. Don Cabana is the former warden at the Mississippi State Penitentiary, also known as Parchman Farm.

The leadership change was made Friday morning by Sheriff George Payne.

The move comes as the jail is under investigation for the death of Jessie Lee Williams. Williams died after he was beaten while in jail custody in February. His family has sued the Sheriff's Department. ...

Yes, they are related. My recollection is that George Payne is a cousin of Tom's, but my memory is rusty. Tom's brother used to be DA; maybe he still is. Their extended family has a admirable record as public servants in law enforcement, the courts, and the fire department down here on the coast.

As for Don Cabana heading down to fix our nightmare of a jail, I'm not privy to his thoughts, but if he can straighten that place out, he'll be doing a great public service. Its been a festering problem for years and years.
