USM marks milestone with bookstore

The imminent opening of the new Barnes & Noble bookstore on the University of Southern Mississippi's campus will mark yet another milestone for USM and its students.

The pleasures of a good bookstore are not to be underestimated, and one that brings together trade books, textbooks and Southern Miss memorabilia has been long needed at the university.

The new store will be the chain's second-biggest collegiate bookstore in the Southeast.

The store has some Hattiesburg-only touches. For example, the children's section will feature Curious George - appropriate since the university's de Grummond children's literature collection is known for its Curious George material.

The store is in the Thad Cochran Center, the $30 million addition to USM's student union.

We can't wait to check it out.

Why I haven't been to a bookstore in over 10 years. I buy all my books via the internet. Amazon.com has a wonderful site.

On campus staff taking classes as well as students can save a lot of money by purchasing their textbooks either via the Internet or across the street.  The Textbook Center charged enough before Barnes and Nobles came to campus.  Needless to say, the prices increased considerably when B & N came.

Wasn't that project begun under the Fleming administration?

How do you do searches on past board discussions? I remember having a discussion about the prices at the textbook center and whether it was more expensive now, but I can't figure out how to find it. Maybe Googler has a suggestion?

You might try this Google search:

search-terms 24082 site:www.activeboard.com/

["24082" is this board's forumID. The number is in the URL of every page on this board. "www.activeboard.com/" is the site that hosts the board.]

So for "bookstore," you might try:

bookstore 24082 site:www.activeboard.com/

Or for "USM bookstore":

USM-bookstore 24082 site:www.activeboard.com/

[The "-" means the two terms are adjacent and appear in that order. Using quotes around the two words and no hyphen would produce the same results.]

For the often-misspelled Barnes and Noble, you might have to try something like this:

Barnes OR Barne OR Noble OR Nobles OR B&N 24082 site:www.activeboard.com/

[The "OR" must be capitalized. Lower case "or" isn't the same thing.]

Here's a tip: Google "bookstore 24082 site:www.activeboard.com/" and then save the result as a bookmark. When you go to that bookmark again, use the Google search window to replace the word "bookstore" with what you're seeking.

Maybe Googler has some better ways.

Am I reading this correctly, that the five-year program of 'expansion' of the Student Union, which required the demolition of McCleskey and McMillin Halls, is now finished, and it is the "Thad Cochran Center?"  So, USM has new buildings named for both Mississippi Senators -- the Trent Lott Center and the Thad Cochran Center?  Hard to believe, given the absolute lack of support for the university by both esteemed gentlemen.

I think the idea is to prepare for when USM becomes The University of Mississippi - Hattiesburg.
