My 2 cents is that the HA really is falling back in line with the local political structure. I haven't seen anything like this since the bidnesspeople were trying to save their guy Thames' job.

Assuming that the numbers aren't bogusified -- which is always a concern in these parts -- I think it's a good thing that USM faculty are bringing in more research money than ever before. Sure, research money is never going to pay the bills, but doesn't increased research funding mean that more profs get more PI stipends, that more grad students get assistantships & that more faculty get the support to expand their research interests? And oh yeah, it means MORE INDIRECTS!

Yes this is great, Invictus, so no one should complain about the reduction in CoAL and the expansion of CoST.  That was SFT's plan and it worked perfectly to get to that $100 million.

I applaud all of the faculty for their hard work at making this happen, but keep in mind that faculty made it happen with the support of hard working staff members. But, is the only research money that is "acceptable" by this administration that which has indirects? There are many external funding efforts that generate research that do not have indirects, yet support graduate students, support programs, and generate excellent research. So, are "indirects" the only measure of contribution to the University, college or department/program? I certainly hope not, but have a pretty good basis for thinking otherwise.
