1. Rumor has it that merit raise information may be given out next week. If you are going to get merit raise information in your college next week, here's a tip from grapevine: expect information on your raise to hit your mailbox next Friday between 4 and 5 pm.
2. news from envelope indicates that enrollment in the graduate business program is about half normal (with school starting in about a month). compaq suggests that a fire sale on admissions will occur between now and then to get the numbers up a bit. Thanks envelope and compaq.
3. domer sends word that everyone needs to go back and re-read the latest "President's Message." He says there is an announcement of a new "council" there --- one that is going cause a lot of heartburn for faculty [based on SFT's plans for making "use of" it]. Thanks domer (will do).
4. According to ntsft, look for time-to-degree at USM to rise dramatically with all of the shortages and problems.

I am speculating that this new "community council" will have the effect of appearing to provide "outside credibility" but what it is really there to do is undermine the legitimate external constituencies like the alumni association and various already established advisory groups. It will end up serving to further fragment the "community" in another divide and conquer strategy. Many posters have been pounding the point about fundraising and Shelby's poor track record with philanthropy. Shelby Thames is going to use this new council to help him raise funds...but watch and see, any fundraising will be directed only at those projects he is interested in...all others will suffer. This move was very well-calculated.
Thanks for the pointer to SFT's latest "love note."
I see the Community Advisory Council as a handpicked assembly of Thames backers and supporters who will be briefed on how to spread the Thames message. I doubt it will produce much in the way of donations for the university.
