"Hattiesburg should be thankful for such a leader as Dr. Angie Godwin at The Area Development Partnership. It is not every day that communities are blessed with an economic developer who not only understands the community's issues but one that carries the credentials vital to creating a niche for the Greater Hattiesburg Area in the new economy."
Apparently Angie attended a plastics conference and told everyone how great Shelby's polymers were in H'burg. Nothing new, that has been going on for a long time.

Second top executive leaves Chamber
Dave Bowman, the longtime economic development specialist for the Baton Rouge Area Chamber, has resigned. He had been with the Chamber since 1997. His departure comes about two months after Nancy Regent, the Chamber's vice president of marketing and operations, left her job. There are no plans to directly replace Bowman. Chamber officials say in the past few months they've hired four new staffers to work in the economic development department, including Chad Cornett, director of business recruitment; Kate McArthur, the business development manager; Steve Sparks, director of retention and expansion and Rachel Pierson, administrative coordinator.
..."Dr. Thames believes in change, obviously change for the better," said senior Chad Cornett of Brandon. "Southern Miss was on a track of mediocrity. I think his restructuring plan was good for the university. After looking at it, it made sense. I think anything that's going to add value to my degree helps the university and helps me as a student."
Cornett, who is working on a double major in speech communications and banking and financing, sees the communication issue differently than some faculty.
"Obviously, there is a communication problem," he said. "The faculty and staff didn't want Thames to begin with. That's where the problem began. I don't think the communication problem is severe enough to cause horrible turbulence."

Two tenured professors terminated
... But a newly developed student group known as Concerned Students of Southern Miss has developed a petition calling for a reevaluation of the suspension of Stringer and Glamser, and a student protest is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. in front of the Administration Building. Student Government Association Attorney General Chad Cornett said the SGA executive cabinet would meet Friday night to discuss the situation and planned to release a statement Monday, although SGA President Jared Loftus was out of town Friday.
Cornett said during a special session of the AAUP on Friday afternoon that an investigation would be launched by the SGA, and he encouraged faculty to be open to discussions and questions from SGA representatives. Loftus said he planned on gathering information from both administrators and faculty before making a decision about how and if the SGA would respond, but he encouraged students to voice their opinions. "If students want to demonstrate or express their concern I'm all for it," Loftus said. "Go for it. That's their right. If they are upset they should say something about it."
The SGA passed a resolution earlier this semester in support of Dvorak, a decision SGA Vice President Sarah Spigener said she was now reconsidering. "I don't know if I could go so far as the say it was misguidance from the administration," Spigener said, about information surrounding Dvorak's resume, but the information used during the debate about the resolution was completely different than what she heard during the AAUP meeting Friday, she said.
Cornett said that although he considers Dvorak a good friend, he would not have allowed the SGA legislation in support of Dvorak to pass if he was the SGA vice president. Loftus said he too thought the SGA has reacted too quickly in some instances, but he would not elaborate on what those instances were....

Other USM projects in bond plan
... The program, which offers degrees through an executive program and a resident program, currently has three professors and a total of 30 students, including Chad Cornett, 22, of Brandon and Clair Feazal, 22, from outside Birmingham, Ala.
"I never had any doubts that (funding) would go through," Cornett said. "I think it's definitely going to put Southern Miss ahead with other institutions in the South."...

Lott center gets approval
...Economic development student Chad Cornett, 22, was thrilled by the building possibly moving forward and by Lott.
"I'm a fan (of Lott)," Cornett said. "I think his name is just in being placed on the building for economic development."
I hate to say "put-up job" but no other phrase comes to mind.
Hell, Angie probably penned that letter herself and handed out copies to all her cronies, hoping someone would sign it for her. Just watch, next she'll be receiving a massive pay raise from the ADP.

Fine with me, so long as it keeps her there. I'm afraid that with her vital credentials as an "economic developer," Doty will be attempting to recruit her for the CoB, maybe even offer to share his booze account. .
Cornett is a sellout and a policitian wannabe. He was slimy as an undergrad, he got slimier when he went to the ED program, and he got even slimier when he worked for Godwin at the ADP before leaving for Baton Rouge.
In 20 years, he'll be the kind of guy the Hattiesburg circles will want as president of USM.

Cossack, I'm sure the Dean of CoB would be glad to discuss this and write an appropriate letter.
Note to COBBER: did you forget who you're talking about? She's a lawyer.

Huh? If I posted something inappropriate or out of order, I apologize. I just looked at my original post and couldn't see what was edited out. It looked intact. If you can do so in general terms, please educate me so that I won't misstep again.
When you say "She's a lawyer," are you speaking of Dr. Dvorak? If so, I'm not certain that's an accurate characterization. She earned a law degree but so far as I know, has never passed the bar or held a license to practice law in any state. So is she considered a lawyer? I really don't know the answer to this question, but have always believed that a law license was a sine qua non. Is that not the case?

Never mind. I just remembered the final comment that you deleted. Again, I apologize for the faux pas, but feel it was fact based and relatively benign compared to many remarks I've seen posted here and in times past, most recently in the Darth Mader thread. Even so, I stand corrected and thanks for protecting me.
My other query concerning whether a law degree makes one a lawyer, still stands.
Cossack, I'm sure the Dean of CoB would be glad to discuss this and write an appropriate letter.
I think it would take a letter from someone more important than a dean to make it happen. Besides, the dean and I are such good friends that it would make the letter suspect.

Well, Cossack, in that case you need to ask David "DJ" Johnson to stop by Shelby's office during his visit later this week. I'm sure he will be able to talk Shelby into taking "proper care of you".
According to several sources that would actually know, A Godwin never even took a bar exam anywhere, mainly because she had no interest in practicing law. As far as credentials for economic developer, I am not sure what that means anyway. I just did a little search around the state. It is all over the place. A few USM grads are spread out in the mix, but the profession pulls from everything conceivable.
ON the Darth Mader thread, not sure that AG and LMS hang out at all anymore. BEsides, AG is a teetotaller and a very boring person in general. LMS, at least, is colorful and entertaining to watch from a distance at THe Hogg.

So, according to several attorney friends, Angeline Godwin is no more an attorney than I'm a physicist (B.S. and M.S. in Physics), and I assure you that I'm no physicist. A law degree does not an attorney make. A license to practice law does. FWIW I don't recall her ever claiming to be an attorney. Back in the day, I think she was quite candid about earning the degree from Cooley in order to pad her resume.
