...in 2004, the VA decided it no longer needed treatment facilities in both Gulfport and Biloxi. It decided to close Gulfport, and relocate those services in Biloxi.
And then the hurricane hit. Warr's been told the VA received $12 million to clean up its Gulfport mess. Once that's done, Gulfport will take over ownership of this 93 acre property.
"They're going to transfer it to us in December," the mayor said....
...So what should Gulfport do with a nearly 90 year old beachfront property, once the feds clear out the hurricane debris and then deed the land over to the city? On Tuesday, Mayor Warr met with the new Gulf Coast Business Council and asked it to come up with a few suggestions.
The mayor has heard a few ideas that he's already considering.
"There's been every kind of idea thrown out in the world, everything from medical uses, educational uses, resort uses," he said.
In 2003, Rep. Gene Taylor and USM President Dr. Shelby Thames even discussed using the Gulfport VA as a teaching hospital.
The mayor plans on discussing the more recent ideas with the city council. Together, they'll come up with a plan that brings the Gulfport VA property back to life.
Isn't the VA hospital property close enough to the water to fall within the new law for land based casinos? Gulfport should build a "City Casino" for itself. It could then do away with city taxes, fund the schools, etc. I vote for a city owned casino.
Is it a fact that when the University of Mississippi was established, it missed going to the site of the Gpt. VA by one vote in the state legislature?
Seems to be a good spot for a new playground university that would rival the hoddy toddy folks in Oxford and all other institutions in the state and region. Is there any move on the part of coast officials to claim this land for higher education expansion? Is this the land that Tom M. is seeking on the coast?
MHA's Monday Executive Briefing - November 24, 2003
"The University of Southern Mississippi hired a physician and entrepreneur whose primary job will be to expand USM's programs into the veterens hospital in Gulfport. Dr. Richard Hadden, 49, a New Orleans native raised in Bay St. Louis graduated with honors from the University Medical Center in Jackson. He believes USM and the VA can quickly form joint programs in the areas of post-traumatic stress disorder, stress disorder, substance abuse and general nursing. 'Those are some of the areas where I think we could contribute immediately, ' he said. 'Our students and staff need experience, and they desire expertise in this area. The cost is very low to make this happen.'
Hadden has served as a Air Force flight surgeon and participated in the founding of several companies. He most recently worked as a technology transfer officer for the University of Mississippi.
'Our U.S. Rep. Gene Taylor and USM President Shelby Thames announced on Veterans Day that they hoped to establish a teaching hospital at the Gulfport veterans hospital on U.S. 90. Taylor is trying to prevent closing of the facility, which could move its services and patients to Biloxi is a committee rules that way in December. USM, the state's largest university, hopes to expand to operations on the Coast.'

No COB posts here YET.
Is there anyone in the COB that has ever studied, in all of their esteemed research efforts, the need for the expansion of higher education on the Gulf Coast?
I bet the answer is no. I really doubt it. Probably busy with research of relationship studies in organizations. Something that has no real impact on Mississippi.

This post will smoke the COB out. I'm sorry.
What is the purpose of this? People comment on how mean spirited the COB posts get, but many others are just as mean toward them.

Please do, I would like to learn about what is transpiring.
The City of Gulfport may decide that the VA property could be best used for its intended purpose....an institution of higher education. Which institution is the question? Is it Ole Ms? Where does the power really lie in this state?
